ATLANTA – The UAB softball team went 2-0 on the opening day of the Buzz Classic in Atlanta with a 9-3 victory over Georgia Tech and a 4-2 triumph over Ohio.
The Blazers combined for 13 runs on 20 hits and had three home runs on the day; two from Analyse Petree and one from Sierra Frazier.
Emily Kachel picked up the win against Georgia Tech, going four innings and allowing five hits while striking out three. Sarah Cespedes pitched the final three innings, allowing just one run and earning the save.
Against Ohio, Amy Woodham entered the game two batters in and facing a 2-0 deficit, but allowed just four hits the entire game and held Ohio scoreless to earn her first career win.
"It is always good to get the season started on the right foot," head coach Jimmy Kolaitis said. "Our young ladies came out with focus and played hard in a tough environment with the weather. We still have plenty to work on, but overall we played well in all aspects of the game. In both games we fell behind early and showed some fight to get back in it."
GAME 1: UAB 9, GEORGIA TECH 3
Analyse Petree went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in leading UAB to a 9-3 victory over Georgia Tech to open the season.
"It was great to see Analyse back in the lineup after missing a full season with an injury. She was huge for us all day," Kolaitis said. "Offensively we put the pressure on the defense and hit a few balls out of the park."
Georgia Tech struck in the bottom of the first as leadoff hitter Emma Kauf took the first pitch she saw deep over the left field wall.
The Blazers responded in the top of the third to even the game at 1-1 with a two-out rally. Leadoff batter KK Crocker and two-hole hitter Faith Hegh each reached base on fielding errors, and Dylinn Stancil earned a walk to load the base. Petree then grounded into a fielder's choice, but Stancil slid safely into second base as Crocker crossed the plate.
Freshman Samantha Bean's first career hit gave UAB a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI double which scored Sierra Frazier, who opened the inning with a single.
The Yellow Jackets tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded hit by pitch, but then UAB erupted down the stretch to score seven runs in the final three innings.
Petree's first of two homers was a no-doubter that came in the fifth inning to give the Blazers a 4-2 advantage. Stancil then had a 2-RBI triple in the sixth to extend UAB's lead to 6-2. The next batter was Petree who launched her second-consecutive two-run home run which broke the game wide open.
Each team would score a run in the seventh as UAB took the 9-3 victory to open the season.
GAME 2: UAB 4, OHIO 2
In her first appearance as a Blazer, Amy Woodham pitched a shutout in seven innings of relief work to lead UAB to a 4-2 victory over Ohio.
Ohio took a 2-0 lead with no outs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run shot by Katie Yun off starter Sarah Cespedes, but Woodham would then enter the contest and shut the Bobcats down.
The Blazers responded in the top of the second with two runs of their own. Sierra Frazier opened the scoring with a solo shot over the left field fence. UAB then drew even after Jenna Olszewski singled, stole second, and score two batters later on an RBI single from Ashton Clem.
Olszewski scored the winning run in the fourth. Following her single, Natalie Erwin laid down a bunt which was thrown into right field, allowing Olszewski to come all the way around for a 3-2 lead.
UAB added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Dylinn Stancil, and that is all Woodham would need as she retired the Bobcats in order in the bottom of the seventh.
"Overall I am really proud of this team. We need to stay focused and finish the weekend as we have a few tough games left to play."
