BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team will welcome Charlotte to the Magic City this weekend as the Blazers begin their final homestand of the 2019 season. Games one and two will be played at Mountain Brook High School at 4:30 and 1 p.m., respectively. The series finale will be played on Sunday at Young Memorial Field at 1 p.m. with the Senior Day ceremony beginning at approximately 12:45 p.m.
UAB (23-26, 8-16 C-USA) is coming off of a 6-4 victory at Auburn on Tuesday night, the Blazers first win on the Plains since 1996. Additionally, the Green and Gold seem to be playing their best baseball at the right moment, having won three consecutive and six of their last eight games. The Blazers are still in the race for the final spot in the Conference USA Tournament set for May 22-26 at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss.
Ryan Wesson and Matthew Calvert have proven themselves to be go-to arms out of the UAB bullpen as of late. Wesson hasn't allowed a run on just one hit in a combined 3.0 innings over his last two appearances, while Calvert has given up just one run over seven hits with three saves in his last 5.0 innings of work.
Offensively, J Paul Fullerton leads the charge, batting .341 with six doubles and three home runs. The catcher missed a large portion of the league season with an injury, but drew a walk in his first plate appearance since the injury in the victory at Auburn.
Riley Davis is scheduled is get the start on Friday for the Green and Gold with Tyler Gates to follow on Saturday before Tanner Graham makes his final home start for the Green and Gold on Sunday in the series finale.
Charlotte (18-27-1, 9-14-1) is coming off of a 2-1 series victory over Middle Tennessee in the Queen City last weekend. Todd Elwood leads an explosive 49ers offense, batting .367 with nine doubles and 11 RBIs.
Admission to Friday and Saturday's games at Mountain Brook High School will be free and open to the public and concessions will be available for purchase. Fans coming to Friday's game will not be allowed into the parking lot until 4 p.m., allowing for after school traffic to be dismissed.
