Charlotte Rallies to Defeat UAB 5-4 in Game One

MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. – A four run lead with four outs to play was not enough for the UAB baseball team as the Blazers fell 5-4 to Charlotte on Friday night at Spartan Field.
UAB (23-27, 8-17) shutout the 49ers until the eighth inning when they scored all five runs over the final two innings.
"Well it was a good game and that one hurts," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We were up by four with four runs to go and they couldn't hold on. It was just a good game, I thought our guys played great, Riley (Davis) pitched fantastic, and it was just a good Friday night game that we came up a bit short on. It's disappointing because you're up four with four outs to go, but good job by the Charlotte kids to rally and score five."
Riley Davis was dominant in the start on the mound, not allowing a Charlotte hit until the fifth inning before giving up just his second hit in the eighth inning. In total the sophomore threw 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and a quartet of strikeouts.
Offensively, Blake Johnson led UAB at the plate being the only Blazer with multiple hits. The senior finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
The Davis offensive duo continued to shine as brothers Jess and Zack also launched solo home runs in the loss. Additionally, Carter Pharis roped his 57th career double to move into a tie for most career doubles at UAB.
UAB got on the board early in the first inning as Tyler Tolbert led off the home half of the frame with a single to right field. A pair of stolen bases moved him 90-feet away before a Charlotte balk allowed the second basemen to come into score and give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers tacked on another run in the fifth inning as Tolbert reached base for the second time, drawing a one-out walk. Two more stolen bases once again moved Tolbert to third followed by Colton Schultz grounding into a fielder's choice, allowing Tolbert to score and push UAB's advantage to 2-0.
In the sixth inning, Z. Davis pushed UAB's lead to three with his team leading seventh home run of the season.
J. Davis gave UAB a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning with the freshman's fourth career home run.
With two outs in the eighth inning, Charlotte knocked a two RBI single into right field to pull within two, forcing the Blazers to go to the bullpen for the first time.
The 49ers continued to score in the ninth inning, plating three runs on four hits to take a 5-4 advantage that it would hold onto, retiring the Blazers in order in the bottom of the frame to secure the comeback victory.
Due to the threat of wet weather in the Birmingham area, game two between UAB and Charlotte has been moved up to 10 a.m. That game will also be played at Mountain Brook High School.
