UAB Travels to No. 17 Ole Miss for Second Straight Road SEC Midweek Matchup

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team will be heading to Oxford, Miss., on Wednesday to take on No. 17 Ole Miss for its second SEC midweek contest on the road in as many weeks. The Blazers will square off against the Rebels at 6 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, and the game will be streamed on the SEC Network+ with live stats available through StatBroadcast.
UAB (15-22, 5-9 C-USA) comes into the matchup after splitting its weekend series against Middle Tennessee as the rubber match scheduled for Sunday was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Blazers were edged in game one, 6-5, but roared back to take game two, 3-1. Freshman infielder Sierra Frazier experienced the most success at the plate for UAB, going a combined 4-for-7 with two RBI through the two games. Freshman pitcher Sarah Cespedes led the Blazers from the circle over the weekend, pitching seven innings and allowing just one run on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.
UAB has held some of the best batting numbers in the conference throughout the season. After leading the conference in batting average and doubles per game a few weeks straight, the Blazers are second in the conference and currently rank No. 47 in the nation in batting average at an even .300. UAB continues to lead the conference in doubles per game and comes in at No. 16 in the country with a 1.73 average as well.
Individually, freshman Faith Hegh leads the charge in the category, averaging 0.31 doubles per game to rank second in the conference and 88th nationally. Sophomore outfielder Jenna Olszewski has also maintained a high-ranking mark this season, coming in at third in the conference and 22nd in the NCAA in triples on the season with four to date.
Ole Miss (27-10, 7-4 SEC) will host the midweek after clinching a weekend series in extra innings on the road at No. 23 Kentucky. The Rebels fell in game one, 11-4, but bounced back in the final two games to come away with an 8-4 win in game two and a 6-2 win in eight innings in game three to take the series. Outside of splitting a two-game series with No. 16 South Carolina, Ole Miss has now won each of its previous three SEC series, dropping game one and clinching the series with wins in games two and three against No. 18 Arkansas and No. 6 Florida as well. Since the beginning of March, the Rebels have posted an 18-4 record.
Ole Miss boasts one of the best pitching staffs in the SEC, ranking second in the conference and No. 24 in the nation in ERA at 2.12. Junior lefty Molly Jacobsen leads the way for the Rebels with a 1.79 ERA and 107 strikeouts, going 10-3 with seven complete games and four shutouts in 20 appearances on 14 starts this season.
Ole Miss also excels at working the base path, leading the SEC in stolen bases and triples per game. The Rebels are ninth in the nation in steals per game with an average of 2.30 and rank sixth in the nation in triples per game with a 0.41 average.
Individually, senior outfielder Kylan Becker leads her team and the conference in hits with 57 on the season, which puts her fifth in the nation currently. Along with that, Becker is ranked second in the SEC and sixth in the NCAA in batting average at 0.471. The Miami, Fla., native has also shown off her wheels, adding seven triples this season, which puts her atop the conference and third in the country.
In the all-time series between the two, UAB currently holds a 2-1 lead. The Blazers took the first two meetings at neutral sites, picking up a 3-0 win in the first matchup on Feb. 19, 2011, then earning a 5-3 win in the second meeting of the programs on Feb. 8, 2013. Ole Miss took the most recent matchup of the squads, 5-0, on April 27, 2016, in the only contest of the series played in Oxford, Miss.
UAB will be back home again next as it hosts Southern Miss for another weekend conference series. The Blazers and Golden Eagles are currently scheduled to play in a doubleheader on Saturday and wrap up the series on Sunday at Mary Bowers Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. start for game two. The series finale is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday. This weekend's schedule is tentative and subject to change depending on weather conditions.
