Big Comeback Lifts UAB Over Southern Miss 4-3 on Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM - Marlene Herrmann's victory at #2 singles capped an incredible comeback to give UAB (6-13, 2-2 C-USA) a 4-3 victory over Southern Miss (12-4, 0-2 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon at George Ward Park. The match was the Blazers' annual Senior Day, where Sophie Dodds and Alexandra Shchipakina were honored before the match.
Due to injuries, the Blazers were down 2-0 before the double point began, forfeiting #5 and #6 singles. UAB, who had only four healthy players available, also did not field a #3 doubles team.
After winning #1 and #2 doubles, USM took a commanding 3-0 lead.
Shchipakina's victory on court 1 put the Blazers on the board. Dominika Hrabalova has a straight set victory on court 2 that got UAB within one. Megan Betrands also won in straight sets on court 4 to tie the match at 3-3.
The match would be decided on court 3, where Herrmann won the first set in a breaker. In the second set, she fell behind 4-1, but mounted a tremendous comeback, winning the next five games to win the set and match.
Up next, the Blazers compete in the Conference USA Championship beginning on April 18th in Houston.
