UAB (10-12) allowed a season high in runs and hits (17) and has now dropped five consecutive games has fallen in nine of its last 10 contests.
"Well first of all congratulations to Alabama A&M," head coach Brian Shoop said. "I thought they played a great game, made some incredible plays and clearly deserved to win the game. With that said we have a role in that as well on both sides."
Tyler Tolbert led UAB offensively, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four stolen bases. The junior turned in his 17th multi-hit game of his career and fifth of the season.
Carter Pharis and Zack Davis also recorded a pair of hits for the Blazers. Pharis went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a double, while Davis was also 2-for-4 with a RBI and drew a walk.
Tyler O'Clair (1-3) took the loss for the Blazers, his second in as many appearances. The freshman allowed five runs on two hits with three walks issued an inning of relief work.
"Our pitching staff now gave up 17 hits and 16 runs to a team that was hitting .226 coming in," Shoop said. "They have given 29 runs in two days so obviously that has to drastically improve. They are not alone, our hitters got eight hits against a pitching staff that had an ERA of 7.76 coming in."
Alabama A&M (6-17) got on the board in the top of the first inning as the leadoff hitter singled to open the game and was driven around two batters later on a double into right field. The second Bulldog came on a single into left center field to push the lead to 2-0.
Tolbert got UAB on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, drawing a five pitch walk. The outfielders swiped his first and second bases of the game before Pharis hit a sacrifice fly into center field to make it a 2-1 game.
The Blazers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a crazy play as Colton Schultz was called out on a dropped infield fly that resulted in a two run error on the shortstop. The third and final run came across the plate on the same play as the second error on the Bulldog's shortstop scored Tolbert to give the Blazers a 4-2 lead.
Alabama A&M plated two more runs in the top of the third inning the first coming off of a UAB error and the tying run came across the plate three batters later on an infield single to knot the game at four.
The Bulldogs opened the game up in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on two hits with a pair of UAB errors to take a 9-4 lead and one would Alabama A&M would not relinquish.
UAB got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Pharis drove in his second run of the game with a single into center field, scoring Tolbert who reached on a two-out throwing error to make it a 9-5 contest.
Alabama A&M added to its big lead in the top of the seventh inning with its second big frame of the game, scoring six more runs on five hits with another UAB error to push its lead to 15-5.
The Blazers tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth inning as Blake Johnson came into pinch hit and reached on a leadoff walk. A wild pitch moved him to third and a sac fly advanced the senior to third before Colton Schultz recorded his first him of the game, scoring Johnson for the first run. Schultz came around to score two batter later as Z. Davis singled through the right side to the game 15-7.
The Bulldogs added to their lead for the final time in the top of the ninth inning scoring one run on a two out single to push their lead to 16-7.
UAB made a final push in the bottom of the ninth inning as Tolbert knocked a no out single up the middle, scoring Keegan Morrow who led off the inning with a pinch hit walk, to give the game its final 16-8 score.
"It's amazing how fast things can slip away because just two weeks ago we were a really good team, playing tooth-to-tooth with one of the top-10 teams in the country," Shoop said. "We are still a good team, our kids just don't believe that right now. The good news is that as quickly as it can get away from you it can also come back that quickly. I really believe we will have a great practice tomorrow and we will play great this weekend. I really believe that."
UAB picks back up Conference USA play on Friday, March 22 when it welcomes Florida Atlantic to Regions Field to begin a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6:30 p.m.
