UAB Defeats Troy 8-6 at Regions Field

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB baseball team improved to 9-2 at home on the 2019 campaign with an 8-6 victory over Troy on Tuesday night at Regions Field.

The Blazers claimed their first Tuesday night midweek win of the season in the victory. UAB continued to perform well at home, having scored at least three runs in every home contest this season.

"We did enough offensively," head coach Brian Shoop said. "It was a tough game, it was a grind, to hang on and get the win so it was great to get back in the win column and we are excited to start conference on Friday."

Tyler Tolbert and Colton Schultz both led UAB at the plate, tallying a pair of hits. Tolbert was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI for his 16th career multi-hit game, while Schultz finished with a team high two RBIs, recording his ninth multi-hit game of the season and eighth with two RBIs or more.

Blake Johnson also contributed, scoring a pair of runs on one hit, drawing two walks. Jess Davis reached base safely on four occasions all four times reaching on a walk.

UAB starting pitcher Tyler Gates went 5.1 innings in his first midweek start, striking out four Trojan batters while allowing just two runs on six hits.

"Tyler Gates, it was great to see him have a good outing for us," Shoop said. We need Tyler to be good and he is so composed and competitive. He is what you want all young pitchers to see in how we goes about his business and we really need him to play a big role on our team so it was great to get a good outing out of him."

J Paul Fullerton extended his on-base streak to 15 games as he reached base on a fielding error in the bottom of the second inning.

Troy scored the game's first run in the top half of the second inning as Dalton Sinquefield singled to right field, plating Hunter Mercer and putting the Trojans up 1-0.

The Blazers answered in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple by Zack Davis, scoring Carter Pharis from first base and tying the game at one. UAB took its first lead of the game as Tolbert singled to short with two outs, scoring Z. Davis from third base and putting the Blazers up, 2-1. UAB plated three more runs in the second, with Schultz recording two RBIs on a single to right field, scoring Tolbert and Johnson. Fullerton reached on an error with two men out, sending J. Davis home from third base and putting UAB up by four, 5-1.

UAB struck again in the bottom of the fourth as Pharis drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Johnson and give the Green and Gold a 6-1 advantage.

Troy plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning on RBI singles by Sinquefield and Logan Cerney, cutting the Blazer lead to three, 6-3.

Fullerton reached base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth and drove in J. Davis, making the UAB lead four runs, 7-3.

The Blazers added on in the bottom of the seventh as Justin Wiley crossed home on a wild pitch, making the score 8-4. Troy's ninth inning comeback fell just shy as the Trojans scored one run in the final frame of the game.

UAB heads to Bowling Green, Kentucky for a weekend series before returning to Birmingham to host No. 18 Auburn.

"We want to wish both of our basketball teams all of the best as they get going in post season play," Shoop said. "Even though we are playing we will be rooting hard for both of them."
