BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team opens Conference USA play this weekend when it travels to WKU for a three-game series, beginning Friday, March 15 at 5 p.m. Games two and three are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with first pitches being thrown at 1 p.m.
UAB (10-7) is coming off of an 8-6 victory over in-state rival Troy on Tuesday night at Regions Field. The Blazers scored five runs in the second inning as Tyler Gates earned the first win of his senior season.
Colton Schultz leads the UAB offense, batting .403, good for the third highest mark in C-USA. The junior has a team high 27 hits and four home runs, while boasting a .687 slugging percentage and has recorded multiple hits in nine contests this season.
Jess Davis has been a force on the base path for the Green and Gold, leading the nation in stolen bases (23) and stolen bases per game (1.4). The freshman needs one stolen base to crack UAB's top-10 swipes in a single season list.
Graham Ashcraft is scheduled to get the start on the mound on Friday for the Blazers. The redshirt sophomore has made three starts this season, all in mid-week action, and carries a 2.45 ERA with 24 strikeouts to just 14 walks over 18.1 innings of work. The Gurley, Ala., allowed no runs on no hits with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings in his first career start at No. 9 Mississippi State on Feb. 20.
WKU (6-9) is in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, including falling 15-0 at Kentucky on Wednesday night in Lexington. The Hilltoppers are batting .265 as a team with 43 extra base hits and a .344 on-base percentage.
Jack Wilson leads the WKU offense, hitting .370 with six runs on 17 hits, four doubles and 10 RBI. Dalton Shoemake leads the pitching staff in wins (1), ERA (4.96) and innings pitched (16.1). The sophomore has allowed nine runs, all earned, on 15 hits with 12 strikeouts and just six walks issued.
