WKU Walks Off In Game One

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Tied at four with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, WKU hit a solo walk off home run to defeat the UAB baseball team 5-4 on Friday night in Bowling Green.
UAB (10-8, 0-1) has now dropped consecutive Conference USA opening games, dating back to 2017, when opening the season at WKU.
The Blazers struggled offensively, scoring its four runs on just five hits with none for extra bases. Blake Johnson led UAB going 2-for-4 with a run scored. The senior tallied his third multi-hit game of the season and seventh of his career.
Jess Davis, Colton Schultz and Carter Pharis also recorded hits, while Davis added a run scored and a stolen base. The swiped marked 24 for the freshman on the season moving him into the top-10 in UAB history for stolen bases in a season.
Ryan Wesson took the loss on the mound for the Green and Gold, allowing one big run on a pair of hits. Cole Whitman shined in relief, throwing 2.1 perfect inning with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.
WKU (8-9, 1-0 C-USA) stuck in the first inning as it hit a two out RBI double into right center field to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers added onto their lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring another run with two outs and take a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, WKU led off the inning with a double before scoring its third run of the game two batters later on a RBI single. The second run of the inning came on the following pitch as a double into left center field gave the Hilltoppers a 4-0 lead.
UAB responded in the top of the sixth inning as Tyler Tolbert reached on a four pitch, one out walk followed by another base on balls awarded to Davis to put two on for Schultz. Schultz singled to right field, scoring Tolbert and Davis, cutting the WKU lead to 4-2.
The Blazers tied the game in the top of the seventh as Austin Triplett walked followed by an infield single off the bat of Johnson. Justin Wiley pinch ran for Triplett before Davis singled into left field, scoring Wiley and Johnson to tie the game at four.
The game remained tied until WKU hit its walk off home run to take the opening game of league play.
UAB and WKU are scheduled to play game two of the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
