BIRMINGHAM – It was a night and day performance for the UAB softball team on Saturday at Mary Bowers Field as the Green and Gold run-ruled Wright State, 10-2, in their first game but were then run-ruled themselves by Austin Peay, 18-4, in the night cap.
UAB (2-2) got production throughout the lineup against Wright State while capitalizing on the Raiders' eight errors in the game. Destini England, Faith Hegh and Ashton Clem led UAB with two hits apiece.
England got the scoring started in the first by getting an infield single and then wreaking havoc on the base paths. The junior stole second and an errant throw from the catcher allowed her to advance to third. Sierra Frazier brought her home with a single up the middle.
It was again England who got the offense started in the third as she hit another infield single but a rushed throw from the shortstop allowed her to advance to second. The Hoover native promptly stole third and was drive home by Hegh who doubled to center field.
In the fourth, UAB punished Wright State (1-3) as the Blazers scored seven runs in the inning while the Raiders committed five errors. WSU was able to get one run back in the top half of the fifth, cutting the Blazers' lead to 9-2.
However, in the bottom half of the fifth Dylinn Stancil called game as she hit a lead-off walk-off home run to straight away center field to give UAB the 10-2 run-rule victory.
Bailie Barnes took the ball for UAB and pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits. The sophomore tallied two strikeouts and didn't allow a walk as she picked up her first win of the season.
In the night cap, Austin Peay (3-1) jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead after the first inning and scored twice more in the second. The Governors tacked on six runs in the third and three in the fifth. The Blazers scored two runs in the first inning as England and Hegh were able to score on a Sarah Crawford single.
Stancil hit her second homer of the day, this time a two-run shot, to left in the third inning. Emily Kachel (0-2) took the ball and loss to Austin Peay.
