The Blazers (7-3, 4-2 C-USA) have now won 17 in-a-row at Legion Field to extend the nation's fourth longest active home winning streak. The streak will be on the line next week in a massive showdown against first-place Louisiana Tech (8-2, 5-1 C-USA).
The win over UTEP (1-9, 0-7 C-USA) also guarantees UAB its third-consecutive bowl game. Season ticket holders and Blazer Booster members can access the bowl application here. Fans may also place their order by clicking hereor calling the UAB Athletics Ticket Office at 205-975-UAB1.
Quarterback Dylan Hopkins led the ground attack with a career high 163 rushing yards and a touchdown. Hopkins threw for 96 yards and an additional score.
Jermaine Brown Jr. also rushed for over 100 as the true freshman carried the ball 22 times for 116 yards and a touchdown to mark his second 100-yard rushing performance of the season. UAB's career leading rusher, Spencer Brown, contributed 66 yards and a touchdown in his first significate action since returning from injury.
Defensively, Kristopher Moll was once again making plays all over the field. The junior finished with a team-high six tackles and added 1.5 TFL, 0.5 sacks and an interception.
UTEP's backup quarterback Gavin Hardison threw for 222 yards, but the Blazers limited the damage with a season high nine pass breakups, led by true freshman Keondre Swoopes who had three.
The Blazers rushed for 226 yards in the first half and built a 23-7 lead at the break. Brown Jr. had 97 of those yards, while Brown pitched in 65 and Hopkins 63.
The lead grew to 30-7 after Hopkins busted open a career-long 78-yard rush down to the UTEP 6-yard line. Brown Jr. punched it in on the following play with 3:53 remaining in the third.
Myron Mitchell scored the only points of the fourth quarter on a spectacular 40-yard receiving touchdown as he toe-tapped just inside the pylon with 5:47 remaining in the contest.
UAB is now one game out of first place in the West division, and hosts league-leader Louisiana Tech next Saturday at Legion Field. Kick is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
