The UAB Athletics Communications Office appreciates your interest in covering UAB Football and looks forward to assisting you during the 2026 season. Our office is located in the West Tower of Bartow Arena. These policies address working-media needs while protecting student-athletes, coaches, event operations and restricted working areas. Please review them before applying for credentials or attending a UAB Football event. Questions should be directed to B.J. Millican or Andy Poole.
CREDENTIALS
Working media must apply for credentials at sportssystems.com/uab. Applications must be submitted at least 48 hours before kickoff. Approval is subject to available space, demand, the purpose of the assignment and operational needs. Credentials are issued to named individuals for a specific working purpose. UAB Athletics Communications may request assignment verification from an editor, producer or other authorized representative of the assigning organization.
Previous approval does not guarantee access to future events. A credential authorizes only the locations and activities specifically approved for that credential. Credentials are nontransferable. Unauthorized use will result in immediate revocation. Organizations allowing unauthorized individuals to use credentials will have their credential privileges revoked for the remainder of the season.
FIELD ACCESS AND CREDENTIAL CLASSIFICATION
Effective immediately, field-level access at UAB home football games is limited to official affiliated media specifically approved by UAB Athletics Communications.
For purposes of this policy, official affiliated media may include:
-
UAB and visiting institutional communications and content personnel.
-
Rights-holding broadcast personnel and approved broadcast partners.
-
Photographers and videographers working on verified assignments for established news organizations or UAB-approved editorial outlets.
Affiliation with an outlet does not automatically qualify an individual for field access. UAB Athletics Communications will determine access based on the assignment, working responsibilities, available space and operational needs. Independent photographers, videographers, personal content creators and other non-affiliated media are eligible for press box consideration only. Approval to attend a game does not authorize field-level photography or access to the sidelines.
Previously approved credentials issued to individuals in these non-affiliated categories for remaining 2026 home football games are canceled. Individuals seeking press box access must submit a new application at sportssystems.com/uab. Reapplication does not guarantee approval.
RESTRICTED AREAS AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
Field-level credentials do not authorize entry into team bench areas, locker rooms, tunnels, team meeting spaces or the playing surface before, during or after a game unless specifically approved by UAB Athletics Communications. Photographers and videographers must remain in designated media areas and behind the dashed yellow boundary line. Credential holders must follow instructions from Athletics Communications, football operations, event management, venue personnel and security.
Credential holders may not interfere with student-athletes, coaches, officials, other media members or game operations. Cheering, autograph seeking and other fan-like behavior are prohibited in working-media areas. A student-athlete, coach, family member or private client cannot independently authorize access to restricted areas.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND CONTENT USE
Only photographers and videographers approved for field-level access may work in designated field-level photography areas. All must wear a UAB-issued photo vest, available at Media Will Call. Vests must be returned after the game as directed by Athletics Communications. Photography and video access is subject to applicable NCAA, American Conference, venue and UAB requirements.
Content captured through a credential must be used for the approved working purpose. Credentials do not independently authorize commercial use of UAB trademarks, logos or other protected intellectual property, or content implying UAB endorsement of a product, service or individual.
Publication Restrictions
Independent photographers and content creators remain subject to a 48-hour publication restriction on photography and video captured through UAB-issued credential access. The restriction begins at the conclusion of the event. During that period, content may not be publicly posted, published, sold or otherwise made publicly available, including through personal accounts, business accounts, galleries or student-athlete accounts.
Private editing, processing and delivery are permitted during the restriction. However, neither the credential holder nor a recipient may publicly distribute the content before the restriction expires. Providing content to another person to circumvent the restriction is prohibited.
Credentialed news organizations, broadcast outlets, approved regular-coverage media and individuals working on approved editorial assignments may publish in the normal course of their authorized coverage. Questions about classification or publication privileges must be resolved with UAB Athletics Communications before publication. Any exception requires advance approval from UAB Athletics Communications.

WEBSITES AND NEW MEDIA
Web-based outlets affiliated with established news-gathering organizations are eligible for credential consideration. Independent digital outlets, podcasts and freelance journalists may be considered for press box credentials on a case-by-case basis. Evaluation may include original coverage, frequency and nature of coverage, professional standards, audience, intended use and available working space.
Freelance photographers and videographers working on verified assignments for approved editorial organizations may be considered for field access under the classification requirements above. Independent photography and content-creation requests are limited to press box consideration. Recruiting-focused outlets may request one credential to provide original game coverage. Approval does not authorize recruiting activity or direct access to student-athletes.
Credentials will not be granted to outlets affiliated with gambling or sites whose primary purpose is fan-generated message boards or forums allowing anonymous comments. Approval of one individual does not extend to other representatives of the same outlet.
WEEKLY PRESS CONFERENCE
Head Coach Alex Mortensen’s weekly press conference is generally held Mondays during game week at noon. Schedule or location changes will be communicated by UAB Athletics Communications.
A transcript will be posted on UABSports.com following the press conference.
PLAYER INTERVIEWS
All student-athlete interviews must be coordinated through UAB Athletics Communications. Media may not contact student-athletes directly to arrange interviews without the permission and knowledge of B.J. Millican or Andy Poole. Wednesday is the final day for student-athlete interviews during game week unless otherwise approved. Interview availability is subject to academic, practice and team obligations.
PROTECTIVE STADIUM PRESS BOX
The press box opens three hours before kickoff. A media meal is provided approximately 90 minutes before kickoff. The press box is a working-media area. Credentials are required, and seating assignments must be followed. Press box credentials do not authorize field or sideline access.
POSTGAME INTERVIEWS
UAB’s locker room is closed to all media. Head Coach Alex Mortensen and selected student-athletes will be available following a 10-minute cooling-off period. An Athletics Communications staff member will collect interview requests with approximately 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Requests are subject to student-athlete availability.
Postgame press conferences are held in the ground-level media work room at Protective Stadium. Access to that room does not authorize entry into other restricted areas.
POLICY ENFORCEMENT
Credential privileges depend on compliance with UAB policies, access restrictions, publication requirements and instructions from authorized personnel. Violations may result in a warning, modified access, removal from an event, credential revocation, suspension for future events or denial of future requests. UAB Athletics will determine the response based on the nature and severity of the violation.
Unauthorized entry into a team bench area or another restricted location may result in immediate removal and loss of future access. Previously approved credentials may be modified or revoked. UAB Athletics reserves the right to adjust access levels and working locations based on safety, space and operational needs.
