BIRMINGHAM– The UAB Football team extended its home winning streak to 18 straight games with a thrilling 20-14 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.
With the win, UAB (8-3, 5-2 C-USA) has moved into a tie for first place with the Bulldogs (8-3, 5-2) and Southern Miss (7-4, 5-2 C-USA) in the West Division standings. The Blazers can make their way back to the Conference USA Championship Game with a victory next week at North Texas and a Southern Miss loss at Florida Atlantic.
UAB is now 18-0 at Legion Field since returning to action in 2017, and completed its third-straight unbeaten season in front of the home fans.
Entering the game as the nation's seventh ranked defense, UAB allowed just 270 total yards to Louisiana Tech, and stopped the Bulldogs on 4th-and-3 from their own 23 courtesy of a pass breakup from senior A.J. Brooks with 1:43 remaining to seal the victory.
Kristopher Moll once again led the defensive charge with a team-high nine tackles, two TFL and one sack. The secondary came up huge the entire night as they recorded nine pass breakups for a second-consecutive game.
Offensively, quarterback Dylan Hopkins threw for 185 yards and a touchdown, while adding 35 yards rushing. Lucious Stanley paced the rushing attack, compiling 61 of the team's 166 yards on the ground. Wide receivers Myron Mitchell (81 yards) and Austin Watkins Jr. (75 yards) combined for 156 of the 185 receiving yards.
The Blazers out-gained the Bulldogs 237-114 in the first half and took a 13-7 lead into the locker room.
With Louisiana Tech leading 7-3 in the second quarter, the Blazers took control late in the half with 10 points in the final 1:35 for the halftime advantage.
After a 4th-and-5 conversion from Hopkins to Watkins Jr., Hopkins found a wide open Gerrit Prince for a 14-yard score to give UAB a 10-7 advantage. The touchdown reception for Prince was the first of his career.
The UAB defense then held the Bulldogs to a three-and-out, and a 48-yard completion from Hopkins to Mitchell moved UAB into scoring territory. From there, Nick Vogel connected on his second field goal of the game with :35 left in the half.
Midway through the third quarter, a fortunate play on fourth down resulted in punter Kyle Greenwell converting a pass to Hayden Pittman to extend UAB's drive on a botched field goal attempt. The Blazers would cash that into seven points as Stanley scored from two yards out to give the Blazers a 20-7 lead with 4:20 left in the third quarter.
LA Tech got within one possession with 8:07 left in the fourth on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Allen to Smoke Harris, but that would all the UAB defense would allow for the remainder of the game.
UAB is now 10-3 in one-possession games since returning to action in 2017, which includes eight coming at Legion Field.
The Blazers conclude the regular season next Saturday at North Texas (4-7, 3-4 C-USA). Kick is set for 3 p.m. CST on Stadium.
