BIRMINGHAM – Wrapping up the midway point of the fall season, the UAB women's tennis team compiled seventeen wins across singles and doubles over the weekend at the first edition of the Samford Hidden Dual.
Competing against teams from Arkansas State, hosts Samford and Conference USA foes Southern Miss, the Blazers did most of their damage in singles play with 14 wins.
"I was happy with the way we competed," head coach Mark Tjia said. "I feel like we learned a lot from the weekend and we are a better team than when we started on Friday. We need to get better in doubles and we will address that in practice this week."
Megan Bertrands and Alexandra Shchipakina were the only two Blazers to win all three of their singles matches on the weekend. Bertrands walked away with victories over Arkansas State's Berta Masdevall-Masip (6-0, 6-1), Southern Miss' Ebru Yazgen (6-3, 0-6, 6-0) and Samford's Arianna Beltrame (6-2, 6-2), while Shchipakina took down Arkansas State's Shelby King (4-6, 6-3, 6-4), Southern Miss' Tanit Lopez (7-6, 6-4) and Samford's Elsa Pool (6-4, 6-3).
Senior Sophie Dodds, junior Hana Sisirak and sophomore Sonia Grzywocz each added two wins in singles play, while Jana Hecking and Dominika added one win.
In doubles play, it was Dodds and Grzywocz earning the Blazers' first win on Saturday with a 6-2 decision over Samford's Pool and Natalia De Ugarte. The same pair then took another doubles match on Sunday, winning over ASU's King and Shelby O'Brien, 6-3.
Shchipakina and Hrbalova added the team's only other doubles victory of the weekend with a thrilling 7-6 decision over Masdevall-Masip and Anita Detlava to wrap up the weekend.
UAB returns to action next weekend when they return to the courts at Samford for the second Samford Hidden Dual. Action is set to begin on Friday.
