BIRMINGHAM – Competing in its final fall tournament in Alabama, the UAB women's tennis team won three draws across doubles and singles at the Roberta Allison Invitational in Tuscaloosa.
Hana Sisirak and Jana Hecking each won their singles draws, while Dominika Hrabolva and Hecking won the back draw in doubles.
"We took three players and came home with two flight titles, so it was a solid outing for us," head coach Mark Tjia said. "More importantly it was good for a couple of girls who have been battling injuries to see some action. They can take some confidence from the way they handled themselves this weekend."
Hecking opened the weekend with a big 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over DePaul's Milica Tesic before cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 win over UT-Martin's Andrea Plantada. She clinched the Shelley Godwin draw on Saturday, battling to a 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Memphis' Katherine Cao.
The No. 2 seed in the Pat Morgan singles draw, Sisirak won her bracket in straight sets. She opened the competition with wins over Lewis' Aleksandra Sredojevic (6-1, 6-2) and UT-Martin's Mizuke Sakurai (6-3, 6-2) before claiming the title with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over South Alabama's Leslie Soto Bustamante, who entered as the top seed in the draw.
Hrabalova earned a single victory in consolation, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Jemima Potter of UT-Martin.
In doubles play, Hrabalova and Hecking claimed the back-draw title in in the Mari Muller bracket. Falling in their opening match to the four-seed pair from WMU, the Blazer duo toppled teammate Sisirak and UT-Martin's Mizuki, 6-3, before winning 6-1 over South Florida's Pellicer and Clark.
UAB wraps up its fall season on the weekend of November 2 when it travels to Bradenton, Florida, to compete in the Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Clay Court. More information on the even can be found here.
