BIRMINGHAM – Senior Alexandra Shchipakina and junior Marlene Herrmann played lights out tennis over the last four days in Wisconsin, coming away with a handful of impressive victories at the Milwaukee Classic.
Herrmann wrapped up the weekend with two wins in singles play, while the pair claimed a dominant win in doubles action over a duo from Michigan State.
"This was a great opportunity to face some of the best players in the nation and we definitely gained from the experience," head coach Mark Tjia said. "We got a couple tough wins in singles, beat a very tough Michigan State doubles team, and had the fourth-seeded Syracuse doubles team on the ropes. They put on a first class tournament and I think the players really enjoyed themselves. It's now up to us to apply the lessons learned for this upcoming weekend at Samford."
After dropping her opening match of the weekend, Herrmann went to work in the consolation draw, earning victories over Colorado State's Emily Luetschwage (6-4, 6-4) and Cincinnati's Ioana Guna due to injury.
The junior found herself in a tight battle in the final eight of the consolation draw, but eventually feel in a thriller to Lauren Lemonds of Michigan State, 7-6, 6-2, 1-0.
Shchipakina had two tough matches on the weekend, falling to an opponent from Wisconsin before bowing out in the back draw of singles play to Utah State's Alexandra Pisareva, 6-2, 6-3.
The tandem also earned an impressive win in doubles, toppling Michigan State's Lemonds and Samantha Memije, 8-4 in the opening round. Following the first-round win, the Blazers took Syracuse's fourth-seeded pair of Sofya Golubovskaya and Guzal Yusupova down to the wire, but ultimately dropped the match, 8-5.
UAB returns to action next weekend when it travels across town to compete at the Samford Hidden Duals.
