UAB Opens Fall Slate with Solid Showing at Racquet Club Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – Dominika Hrabalova and the UAB women's tennis team got its fall schedule off to a great start after putting together a solid weekend of tennis at the Racquet Club Invitational in Midland, Texas.

"There were positives and negatives to take away from this weekend as to be expected playing this early in the fall," head coach Mark Tjia said. "Dominika had a couple good, wins but overall we showed our rust and we need to hit the practice courts."

Hrabalova got going in singles play in the back draw, taking down Penn State's top player Frederikkc Svarre, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore also earned a thrilling singles win in a bonus singles match over UTEP's Erandi Martinez, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Sophie Dodds worked her way to the singles back draw final four with wins over UTEP's Milena Baigorria (4-6, 6-4, 10-8) and UTA's Nanaka Takeuchi (6-3, 7-5) before falling 7-6, 6-4 to UTA's Almudena Bosa.

UAB did not record a victory in doubles play on the weekend, but put together some great battles on the weekend. The Blazers' top doubles performance came from Sonia Grzywocz and Hrabalova, giving Penn State's Svarre and Sammi Smith all they could handle in an 8-3 loss.

The Blazers return to action next weekend in Milwaukee when they compete in the Milwaukee Classic on Sept. 20-23.
