BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team opened its final homestand by splitting the opening two games of its series with UTSA. The Blazers dropped game one 3-0, but bounced back to win game two 1-0 Saturday at Mary Bowers Field.
Analyse Petree provided all the run support the Blazers needed in game two, smacking a leadoff home run over the fence in left in the bottom of the fourth inning. The homer was Petree's seventh of the season.
The rest of the day belonged to Claire Blount.
UAB (21-29-1, 12-7-1 C-USA) got a stellar performance from its starting pitcher as Blount (6-12) threw her 11th complete-game of the season in the win. The lefty needed just 86 pitches as she gave up three hits to the Roadrunners while striking out two and walking one.
UTSA (19-26, 7-13) also had solid pitching from Madison Nelson (5-16) and Lizzy Fox. Nelson got the start and tossed four innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out two. Fox came on in relief and threw two innings giving up just two hits and kept the Blazers off the board. Nelson took the game two loss.
The Green and Gold mustered only five hits in game two with Rachel Rogers picking up two of them. Destini England, Petree and Blount had the other Blazer hits.
The day started out rough for UAB as it dropped the opening game of the series 3-0. In the top of the second, UTSA scratched across a run and then used two solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend the lead.
Pitching was the name of the game for the Roadrunners as Fox (12-10) pitched a complete-game, frustrating the UAB hitters all day. The senior allowed just two hits in game one while walking two and striking out one.
Emily Kachel (11-13) got the game one start for the Blazers and threw six innings giving up two runs on six hits. The freshman walked three and struck out five in the loss. Megan Smith saw an inning of work in the circle for UAB allowing one run on one hit while striking out two batters.
