Blazers Face FAU Wednesday in C-USA Tournament Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team begins its quest for a Conference USA Tournament championship Wednesday at 9 p.m. when the sixth-seeded Blazers battle No. 11 seed Florida Atlantic from The Ford Center at The Star.
UAB (19-12) finished the regular season Saturday with a convincing 101-73 victory over WKU on Senior Night. Sophomore Nate Darling scored a career-high 23 points and made all six of his three-point attempts to lead six players in double figures. Overall, Darling averages 10.0 points per game and ranks eighth in Conference USA with a .417 three-point percentage.
Senior William Lee added 18 points, four rebounds and two blocks against the Hilltoppers and on Monday was named to the Conference USA All-Defensive Team for the third consecutive year. Lee ranks third on the team with 10.1 points per game and second on the team with 6.8 rebounds per game. In addition, the Selma, Ala., native stands 36th in the NCAA with 2.1 blocks per game and is eight shy of 300 for his career.
Chris Cokley finished with 17 points, four rebounds and a career-high six assists on Saturday and leads UAB in scoring (17.2 ppg), rebounding (8.7 rpg), field goal percentage (.584) and free throw percentage (.824). The Savannah, Ga., native also paces the league with 13 double-doubles and was named to the All-Conference USA First Team on Monday.
Zack Bryant also scored 17 points to go along with a career-high eight rebounds and was tabbed as the Conference USA Freshman of the Week. Bryant also earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team following a debut season that saw him average 13.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He ranked third in the league in scoring among freshman and featured 25 games in which he scored in double figures.
Florida Atlantic (12-18) dropped its final two games of the regular season and has lost three of its last four games heading into the Conference USA Tournament. Senior forward Ronald Delph, who was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team on Monday, paces the Owl offense with 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Senior guard Justin Massey adds 13.8 points per game and is second on the team with 72 made three-pointers.
UAB and Florida Atlantic will meet on the hardwood for the 10th time in school history when the two teams battle on Wednesday. The Blazers own a 7-2 lead and have won five straight in the all-time series that dates back to the 2008-09 season. Earlier this season, UAB turned in a 75-44 victory over the Owls in Boca Raton behind 24 points and 10 rebounds from Cokley. Bryant added 11 points and five assists in the victory. UAB and Florida Atlantic have never met in Conference USA Tournament Play.
