Blazers Even Series With 18-10 Win

"Baseball is a crazy game," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We had a game where nobody could score in game one and then we had a game that's so offensive every out is like pulling teeth and it's one of the things that makes baseball beautiful. Justin Wiley is so talented and plays with so much energy so I put him in the leadoff position to hopefully just give us a spark and oh my word. For a team that has been struggling to score tonight was a good night. I am proud of them and so it was a good win so we have a chance now to win a series, hopefully Ryan Wesson will give us a great start."
UAB (11-14, 4-4) opened the flood gates in the first inning scoring five runs on four hits. After pushing three runs across the plate, Tyler Tolbert hit a two-out single to centerfield to score Brett Blackwood and Carter Pharis and put the Blazers ahead 5-0 after one.
Charlotte (15-11, 5-3) answered in the home half of inning hitting a two-run home run down the left field line to cut the score to 5-3.
The Blazers strung together three RBI doubles in the second inning from Colton Schultz, Thomas Johns and Pharis to tack on three runs. Pharis stole third base before swiping home for the fourth run of the frame to put the Blazers up 9-3.
The third inning looked a lot like the previous two as the Blazers got the leadoff runner on base for the third consecutive inning with a Cole Collins walk. Three hits and two runs later gave Stephen Dobbs bases loaded with one-out. Dobbs proceeded to hit his first career home run, a grand slam to left center to put UAB up 15-2.
The 49ers answered in a big way in the fourth inning scoring six runs on seven hits with one UAB error to make the game 15-8.
Wiley drew a two-out walk in the sixth inning to reach base for the second time. He swiped his second and third base of the game before coming around to score on a wild pitch to put the Blazers up 16-8.
Dominick Cammarata hit his second home run of the game in the seventh with a two-run blast to left field to cut the UAB lead to six.
Tolbert pushed another Blazer run across the plate in the eighth inning as he drew a one-out walk. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before stealing third and coming around to score on a failed pickoff attempt to make the game 17-10.
Schultz put the exclamation on the night in the ninth inning when he blasted his second career home run with a solo shot over the right field wall for UAB's 18th and final run.
Isaiah Gonzales-Montoya earned his second win of the season coming in in relief of Ryan Ruggles in the third inning. Gonzales-Montoya went three innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits while striking out one. Colby Bruce took the loss for the 49ers.
UAB's 18 runs scored is its most since scoring 18 against LA Tech on April 17, 2015. The Blazers also finished with a season high 19 hits, 43 at-bats, 14 RBI, two home runs, 28 total bases and six stolen bases. Defensively, UAB turned a season-high seven double plays.
Dobbs' grand slam in the third inning was UAB's first since Griffin Gum did it at Ohio State on May 3, 2016. Pharis' steal of home was also the Blazers' first since Antonio Ralat did it against Rice on May 20, 2017.
Every member of the Blazers' starting lineup recorded a hit for the first time this season. Schultz led the group going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, a walk and a RBI while picking up his fourth multi-hit game in the last five contests.
Schultz's home run was his first since hitting one at Samford on May 2, 2017. The sophomore tallied career highs in hits, runs and tied his season high in walks.
Blackwood picked up his fourth multi-hit game of the season with a career high three hits, two runs and two RBI.
Pharis went 2-for-4 on the night for his eighth multi-hit game of the season. He also finished with a career high two stolen bases.
Tolbert had a career night at the plate with three hits and a season high two RBI while adding his 14th stolen base.
Dobbs' grand slam lifted him to a career-high four RBI night. The catcher finished 2-for-4 with a run scored picking up his first multi-hit game of the season.
Johns tallied a career high three RBI on a season-high two hits while Collins went 2-for-5 with three runs scored for his sixth career multi-hit game.
The two teams square off in the rubber match on Saturday with first pitch slated for noon CT. The Blazers then return home to play the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday night, April 3, at Regions Field at 6 p.m.
