CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A three-run eighth inning lifted the UAB baseball team to a 4-3 victory and gave the Blazers their second consecutive Conference USA road series win on Saturday afternoon at Charlotte.
"Baseball is crazy isn't it," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We went from everybody almost scoring at will yesterday to it being very, very hard to score today and that is the craziness and beauty of baseball. Charlotte had won both conference series so it was a hard fought weekend and it is really great that we got out of here with two wins."
Charlotte (15-12, 5-4) took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning scoring its runs on four hits and one UAB error. The 49ers got bases loaded with one-out before Reece Hampton singled through the right side to score the first run. Jackson Mims reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the error as the final two runs crossed the plate.
UAB (12-14, 5-4) got a run back in the seventh as Colton Schultz hit a leadoff single to left field and came around to score on a Carter Pharis single to the same place to make the game 3-1.
The Blazers took the lead in the eighth as Tyler Tolbert and Schultz reached base to give Brett Blackwood two-on with one out. Blackwood then hit his second home run of the season with a three-run shot to left center field to give the Blazers the 4-3 win.
"Today was special for our kids," Shoop said. "It was special for Brett Blackwood who went through multiple surgeries and procedures that have kept him from playing for so long, I'm so happy for him."
Tyler Gates (2-0) earned the win for UAB after coming in in relief for Ryan Wesson. Gates proceeded to throw four perfect inning collecting one strikeout on just 42 pitches thrown.
"Tyler Gates is almost unbelievable, he is our Flame On Courage Award winner, that he cannot pitch for as long as he does in between stints and still have incredible feel," Shoop said. "He's so unbelievably competitive on the mound that I couldn't take him out even though he was about at pitch count."
Schultz extended his team-best hitting streak to eight games as he went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Blackwood finished the day with a season-high three RBI.
UAB returns to Birmingham for a pair of mid-week games beginning on Tuesday when it faces the Birmingham Barons at Regions Field. First pitch between the Blazers and Barons is slated for 6 p.m.
