UAB Shows Out at Samford Round Robin
10/7/2018 7:43:00 PM | Women's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM – Returning to courts at Samford for the second-straight weekend, the UAB women's tennis team put on a show, claiming 17 wins in both singles and doubles at the Bulldogs' Round Robin Tournament.
Marlene Herrmann was recognized after the tournament for her strong play, earning the No. 2 Line Championship after winning two of her three singles matches. She opened the weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 win over South Alabama's Nikola Kohoutova before falling in her second match. Needing a big win, Herrmann came through by defeating Samford's Natalia De Ugarte 6-4, 6-4.
"This tournament will help get us ready for the ITA Southern Regional this week," head coach Mark Tjia said. "We had some really tough matches and most of the girls competed really well. Our doubles got better, but is still a work in progress."
Senior Sophie Dodds was a difference maker on the weekend, winning all three of her singles matches and two of her doubles matches, the only Blazers to do so. Dodds earned wins over South Alabama's Leslie Bustamante (6-2, 6-0), Memphis' Aleksandra Topalovic (3-6, 7-6, 6-0) and Samford's Elsa Pool (7-6, 6-4) before claiming two victories in doubles play with her partner, Hanna Sisirak.
Claiming two victories in singles play was Megan Bertrands and Dominika Hrbalova, while Sisirak and Jana Hecking each claimed one win in singles on the weekend.
With doubles being a point of emphasis all week at practice, Dodds and Sisirak took down Samford's duo of Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest (7-5) and South Alabama's Nikola Kohoutova and Leslie Bustamante (6-4). Hrbalova and Hecking were the only other true pair of Blazers to earn a doubles win, toppling Josephine Cao and Claire Sullivan, 7-6.
The Blazers return to action this weekend when they travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to compete in the ITA Southern Regional. More information on the tournament can be found here.
