UAB to Host Georgia in Preseason Exhibition on Thursday

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will kick off its 2018-19 season on Thursday, October 18, at 7 p.m. when it welcomes the University of Georgia to Bartow Arena as part of the Hoops Season Tipoff Event presented by the UAB Bookstore.
The contest will serve as the Blazers' first exhibition game of the 2018-19 season ahead of their final tune-up against Morehouse College. It will be the first time since the 2011-12 season that UAB has played two exhibition games to open a season.
Proceeds from the game will be donated to the American Red Cross in support of disaster relief efforts.
"This game is a great way for us to open the new season," head coach Robert Ehsan said. "Georgia has a great team and an outstanding coach in Tom Crean, so we are looking forward to the challenge they will give us. I want to thank Coach Crean for being willing to come to Bartow Arena to play a game for a great cause such as the American Red Cross. I hope that our fans will show up and be loud to help us get our season off to great start."
UAB is coming off a 20-13 season, its third 20-win season in the last four years and the sixth in the past 10.
Conference USA All-Freshman Team member Zack Bryant headlines five returners to the squad. Bryant started all 33 games for the Green and Gold as a rookie, averaging the second-most points on the team at 13.6, while bringing in 3.2 boards per game and dishing out 3.1 assists per game.
Seniors Jalen Perry and Lewis Sullivan return 7.5 points per game and 7.2 points per game, respectively, while sophomore Makhtar Geuye also saw minutes during the 2017-18 season, averaging 2.2 points per game. Anderson McCoy and Luis Hurtado will look to compete for playing time this year after redshirting last season, while the Blazers welcome in eight newcomers who look to make an immediate impact on the team.
The Bulldogs finished the 2017-18 campaign with an 18-15 overall record and a 7-11 mark in SEC play. They went on to win two games in the SEC Tournament before bowing out to eventual conference champions Kentucky, 62-49, in the quarterfinals.
Entering the first year of the Crean era, the Bulldogs return 11 letterwinners from last season's squad and three starters in William Jackson, Derek Ogbeide and Rayshaun Hammonds. Georgia also welcomes in five newcomers to round out its 16-man roster.
Tickets for the opening exhibition game will be $10. Tickets for groups of 20 or more are available for $5 on a pre-ordered basis.
Individual season tickets for the 2018-19 UAB men's basketball campaign are on sale now and start as low as $105 in Blaze's Corner.
