BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It was a happy Homecoming Saturday night at BBVA Compass Field as a late match goal from Aidan O'Hara in the 83rd minute gave the UAB men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Central Arkansas. The Blazers improve to 3-4-3 on the season while the Bears fall to 5-7-0.
"Winning certainly helps but performance is what we talk about all the time and our performance all season long has been good," head coach Mike Getman said. "We've played well almost every game this season but haven't always gotten the results that we deserved. Tonight we performed well in the second half and got the win, even better."
UAB took an early lead in the 12th minute when Massimo Ferrin netted a cross at the top of the box off the foot of Rami Dajani to grab a 1-0 lead. Ferrin, the team leader in goals this season, picked up his fourth goal this year while Dajani tallied his sixth career assist.
Central Arkansas cut the Blazers' lead to one with 18 minutes left to play in the first half when Niklas Broadacki headed in a pass from Kyosuke Kubota. Broadacki, the 19th best offensive threat in the country, picked up his ninth goal of the season.
With the second half coming to an end, O'Hara found himself on a breakaway with nothing between him and the Central Arkansas goal except for the Bears' keeper. O'Hara fired a shot into the back of the net for his first career goal and secured the UAB 2-1 victory.
"The first half we looked a little confused," Getman said. "The second half the guys really figured it out and picked it up. We played great the final 45-minutes, the guys got the goals they deserved and it was a really good win against a very good team."
O'Hara's goal made him the eighth different Blazer to find the back of the net this season and the first freshman to accomplish the feat.
Ferrin's goal gave him his team-best ninth point of the year and he has tallied points in five matches this season.
UAB outshot Central Arkansas 14-12 while the Blazers' keeper James Teal picked up to six saves to the Bears' five.
The Blazers pick back up league play with a trip across the country to New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 14. Kickoff between the Blazers and Lobos is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT.
