BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB shortstop Holly Krzan looped a single just over the head of the second baseman in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the game-winning run as the Blazers (19-13, 2-3 C-USA) knocked off the Marshall Thundering Herd 3-2 at George Ward Park. Catcher Andrea Rogers helped UAB take the series with her ninth homerun of the season.
Blazer pitcher Jennifer Nelson (13-5) was solid in the circle, giving up one earned run on four hits and striking out four.
Marshall (16-11, 3-3 C-USA) took a 1-0 in the second after an error, passed ball and RBI-single plated a run.
The Herd made it 2-0 in the third when the runners at first and third pulled a double steal, scoring a run on the throw attempt to get the runner at second.
The Blazers cut the lead to one when Rogers went deep in the bottom half of the inning. The blast ties UAB's single-season homerun record, which Rogers set last season as a freshman, and puts her atop the career homerun charts with 18.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, UAB still trailed 2-1 when Kayla Harris started the rally with a leadoff single. Nelson followed with a bunt and beat out the throw to put runners at first and second. Leigh Walker slapped another bunt back toward the circle and the pitcher came up firing to third for the force out, but her throw sailed into leftfield and Harris dashed home to tie the game. After Lindsay Stanley lined into a double play, Krzan stepped up to the plate with runners at first and second. Krzan smacked the ball over the glove of the second baseman and Walker sprinted from second, crossing the plate to cap off the Blazers seventh-inning comeback with a 3-2 victory.
With the win, UAB takes its first conference series of the season. The Blazers also improve to 9-3 at home.
UAB will continue the homestand on Tuesday, hosting the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The two teams will square off at 6:00 p.m.
