BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB only mustered a trio of hits, as the Mississippi State Bulldogs downed the Blazers 5-0 on a clear evening at George Ward Park. The win marks the Bulldogs' fifth consecutive win over the Blazers and fourth victory in Birmingham. UAB (19-14, 2-3 C-USA) falls for just the fourth time at home this season.
Although the two Mississippi State pitchers only combined to strike out three Blazers, UAB went down in order four times and had just one runner advance past first base.
The Bulldogs (18-14, 2-6 SEC) took a 2-0 lead in the third after the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double into leftfield.
State added another pair of runs in the fifth on a homerun and a couple of singles. UAB's solid defense prevented the Bulldogs from blowing the game open, as the Blazers putout two runners at the plate.
An error and another leftfield double made the Bulldogs' lead 5-0 in the sixth, capping off State's first win in their last four games.
Blazer pitcher Kayla Harris (5-6) tossed four innings en route to her sixth loss of the season, giving up four earned runs and striking out three. Jennifer Nelson (13-5) relieved Harris in the fifth and gave up one unearned run while strike out five.
UAB will look to rebound from the loss on Thursday, hosting the University of North Florida Lady Ospreys for a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the second immediately following.
