Softball Takes Two From Houston

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (35-17, C-USA 13-7) took two games from Houston (32-23, C-USA 6-13) this afternoon in Conference USA action at George Ward Park Field #6. The Blazers won the first game 4-1 and the second game 4-1.
The Blazers scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Kai Paul (Tarrant, Ala.) led the inning off with a single up the middle. Senior third baseman Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.) singled to left field to advance Paul. The Blazers loaded the bases when junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) singled up the middle. Paul scored when freshman Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) walked. Junior shortstop Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.) drove in three runs off a double to left field.
Houston fought back in the top of the sixth inning when they scored a run off three hits. Lindsay Durham led the inning off with a double to left field. Durham scored on a single to center field by Leslie Seay.
Leading UAB at the plate was Hithe who was 3-4, with two RBIs.
Senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) picked up the win for the Blazers. Stephenson (13-8) allowed one run off five hits in seven innings of work, recording four strikeouts.
In game two, the Blazers took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hithe scored on a double to right field by junior Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.). Blazers led 1-0.
UAB added a run in the second when sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.) hit a home run to center field.
The Cougars fought back in the top of the third inning when Durham hit a home run to left field. Blazers led 2-1.
UAB scored again in the third inning. Hithe led off with a single and scored on a hit to center field by sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.). After singling, Engram added a run on a hit by Vaughn. UAB led 4-1.
Top hitters in game two for the Blazers were Engram who was 2-4, with a double, a run and a RBI and also Ellis, 2-3 with a home run, a run and a RB.I
The winning pitcher for the Blazers in game two was junior Kerri Foster (McCalla, Ala.). Foster (13-6) allowed one run off two hits. Foster recorded five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
"It is nice to come out and score first," said Head Coach Marla Townsend. "The hitters executed with runners in scoring position and they were aggressive at the plate. The pitchers did a great job today holding Houston to only a run each game. Defensively, we played relaxed and got the job done."
The Blazers will face Houston tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
