Softball Takes Final Game of Series From Houston

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (36-17, C-USA 14-7) beat Houston (32-24, C-USA 7-13) this afternoon in the final game of the series, 9-1.
The Blazers scored first in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.) scored on a single to right field by freshman outfielder Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.). With two outs, senior first baseman Kai Paul (Tarrant, Ala.) doubled to center field to drive home Ellis, Candice Hithe (Daphne, Ala.), and Cliffanie Engram (Pelham, Ala.). Blazers led 4-1.
Houston fought back in the fourth inning when Kim Nesloney led off with home run to left field, 4-1.
The Blazers started the bottom of the inning off with back-to-back home runs by junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala) and Ellis. Freshman Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.). Paul followed with another hit to score Christophel. Blazers led 8-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, UAB added another run to end the game when senior third baseman Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.) doubled to score Mullins, 9-1.
The winning pitcher was senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.). Stephenson, (14-8) allowed only one run on four hits and struck out four in six innings of work.
"The players have been working hard all season," said Head Coach Marla Townsend. "Our bats came alive today against Houston. Hitting is contagious as proven in the back-to-back home runs. Our defense backed up our pitcher with solid play. Our seniors stepped it up on senior day."
The Blazers will play its final home game of the season this Tuesday when they take on Jacksonville State in a doubleheader, beginning at 4 p.m.
