Softball splits with East Carolina

Greenville, N.C. - UAB (21-8, 4-1) split this afternoon in conference action against East Carolina University. The Blazers won the first game, 1-0, and then fell short in the second, 3-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Blazers scored first when senior first baseman Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) singled to bring in sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.), who scored the only run of the game, 1-0.
Leading the Blazers in the first game was Mullins who went 3-3 and sophomore Emily Scarbrough (Ooltewah, Tenn.) who was 2-4.
The winning pitcher was senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.). Stephenson (8-3) threw all seven innings for UAB, allowing only two hits and recording five strikeouts.
"This game was a big win for us considering it was our first conference road game," said Head Coach Marla Townsend. "We put the ball in play well. Beth and Emily set the standard for hitting in this first game."
In the second game, ECU scored two runs off two hits in the bottom of the first inning, 2-0.
The Blazers fought back in the top of the sixth inning when freshman Kris Lara (Elk Grove, Calif.) scored on a throwing error by Pirates right fielder after freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.) singled, 2-1.
ECU added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one run off one hit, 3-1.
Freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.) led UAB in game two going 2-3 with a RBI.
Junior Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) took the lost for the Blazers, allowing three runs off four hits. Thompson (6-2) recorded six strikeouts in six innings of work.
"Sara really proved herself by having quality at bats in both games," said Townsend.
The Blazers are up next tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to play the final game of the series against East Carolina University.
