Softball Finishes Series with ECU, 2-1

Greenville, N.C. - The Blazers (22-8, 5-1) beat East Carolina (22-14, 4-5) in the final game of the series this afternoon, 3-1.
The first run of the game was in the top of the fifth inning when freshman Sara Christophel (Birmingham, Ala.) scored on a hit by sophomore second baseman Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.). The Blazers added another run when sophomore catcher Amanda Ellis (Axis, Ala.) scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by junior pitcher Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.), 2-0.
The Pirates answered back when they scored a run off three hits in the bottom of the inning, 2-1.
UAB added a run in the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Emily Scarbrough (Ooltewah, Tenn.) scored on another hit by Mullins, 3-1.
Leading hitters for UAB were Mullins, who went 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs and senior Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) who was 2-4 with two doubles.
The winning pitcher was Kerri Foster (Birmingham, Ala.) who threw six innings, allowing one run off five hits. Foster (8-3) had one strikeout on the day.
Senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.) picked up the save (2) for UAB, throwing an inning and only allowing a hit.
The Blazers are up next in more conference action this Friday at Southern Mississippi, beginning at 5 p.m.
