DePaul Sweeps Doubleheader from UAB Softball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Eighth-ranked DePaul (28-7-1, 8-0 Conference USA) keep its Conference USA unbeaten streak alive and extended its overall winning streak to 14 games by sweeping both games of a Conference USA softball doubleheader against UAB (19-23, 3-5 C-USA) at George Ward Park. The Blue Demons won the first game 3-0 and took the second contest 9-0.
The first game was scoreless through eight innings of play.
DePaul broke through in the top of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly to to center field by right fielder Shavaughne Desecki, which allowed first baseman Sarah Douglas to score. Catcher Gina Ramacci then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring shortstop Liz Bouck. DePaul's final run came on a double steal attempt as Ramacci stole second and designated player Sarah Martz stole home.
Lindsay Chouinard (12-4) had a complete game no-hitter for DePaul. Chouinard pitched nine innings, walked none and recorded nine strikeouts. Kelli Thompson had a complete game for UAB and picked up the loss. Thompson allowed three runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three.
In the second game, DePaul was led by Desecki, who was two for three with three RBI. Douglas was two for two with a triple and two RBI, left fielder Tatum Allen went one for two with a double and an RBI, Ramacci was one for three with an RBI, and first baseman Amy Starr and second baseman Katy Kukman also contributed one RBI each.
Martz (16-3) pitched a complete game one-hitter, walking none and striking out 3. Thompson (8-12) went two innings and got the loss. She allowed six runs on seven hits and walked one. Mandie Wyatt pitched three innings in relief and gave up three runs on five hits.
The final game of the series will be Sunday at George Ward Park Field No. 6 at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
