Bryan Koch joined the UAB Athletics staff in 2001 and has served as the Men’s Basketball Athletic Trainer for the past 20 seasons. In 2017, Koch added the additional role of Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine.
Prior to his current role, Koch served as a senior member of the UAB Sports Medicine Department as Associate Athletic Trainer, a role he assumed in 2006. From 2001-2003 Koch worked as an athletic trainer for both the Blazer Men’s Basketball and Football teams, before relinquishing his football responsibilities in 2003. Prior to coming to UAB, Koch served as the Men’s Basketball Athletic Trainer at Samford University and Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for Baseball at Auburn University.
As Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, Koch is responsible for overseeing the health and well being for all UAB student-athletes. The UAB Sports Medicine department consists of 8 staff certified athletic trainers, 4 intern athletic trainers, 6 team physicians, as well as contracted physical therapists, chiropractor, and massage therapists. The department also oversees referrals to specialists within UAB Medicine and outside providers.
Serving in his current role, Koch serves on the senior administrative staff, mental health committee, and concussion committee, he also serves as the drug testing coordinator. The department has seen further strengthening of alliances with several UAB Medicine entities. The department has also launched several research and care initiatives with several departments in the University; including: the School of Optometry (BlazerVISION), the School of Engineering, the School of Medicine – Department of Neurology, and the school of Health Professions – Department of Nutrition Sciences and Department of Physical Therapy.
Koch has played an instrumental role in the rehab and prevention of injuries to men’s basketball players over the years. During his time at UAB, Koch has been a part of four NCAA Tournament teams, including the 2004 Sweet 16 squad, and four NIT selections.
Koch is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Southeast Athletic Trainer’s Association, and Alabama Athletic Trainers’ Association. In 2016, Koch was the recipient of the ALATA College Athletic Trainer of the Year. In 2012, Koch received the Beless Award, given annually to outstanding young professionals who participated in youth sports at the Vincennes YMCA.
Born and raised in Vincennes, IN, Koch received his Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Indiana State in 1998. He received his Master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Auburn in 2000.
