BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy announced the signing of Syracuse transfer Chance Westry on Friday.
"Great to have Chance join Blazer basketball" Kennedy said, "Chance is a talented kid who has had a challenging start to his collegiate career due, unfortunately, to a series of injuries. He's healthy now and excited to don the green and gold in his quest to fulfill his tremendous basketball potential."
Westry was a highly touted prospect in the 2022 class, ranking No. 36 by Rivals, No. 37 by On3, No. 39 by 247 Sports, and No. 39 by ESPN. He began his standout prep career at Trinity High School in Pennsylvania where he was named the Class 3A Player of the Year as a sophomore after averaging 24.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Following his freshman and sophomore years at Trinity, Westry transferred to Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth, California for his junior season where he averaged 14.2 points per game. He then attended Arizona Compass Prep for his final season of high school basketball where he averaged 13.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He led the Dragons to a quarterfinal appearance in the GEICO High School Nationals.
The 6'6" guard signed with Auburn out of high school but was slowed by a leg injury prior to the season. He appeared in 11 games with the Tigers seeing limited minutes. Against Colgate, he played a season-high 18 minutes and scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds, had two assists and two steals.
Following his freshman season at Auburn, the Harrisburg, Pa. native transferred to Syracuse ahead of the 2023-24 season. He was met with another preseason leg injury that forced him to miss the entire season. Westry was again forced to miss extended time with an illness during the 2024-25 season, which resulted in him only appearing in three games.
Westry joins Jacob Meyer as the second transfer portal signee to come to UAB ahead of the 2025-26 season. The Blazers have also added a pair of high school signees in Lance Carr and Salim London in addition to four JUCO signees in Evan Chatman, Ari Gooch, Dayjaun Anderson and João Das Chagas.
