Blazers Fall in Close Game to ECU

BIRMINGHAM - UAB (19-20, 4-10) dropped a close game to East Carolina (24-16, 9-5) on Friday night at Young Memorial Field by a score of 5-3.
The Pirates picked up where they left off on Thursday as they plated a run in the top of the 1st on a Dixon Williams RBI single to score Braden Burress.
Both teams were held scoreless until the 5th inning. That is when Landon Beaver cranked his first career home run that landed well over the right field fence to tie the game at one apiece.
ECU took the lead back in the top of the 6th when Austin Irby doubled down the left field line to plate Williams and John Collins to give the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the 7th, Williams reached on a fielder's choice as the Blazers attempted to turn a double play, but Williams was safe at first. Burress scored from third to give ECU a 4-1 advantage.
In the bottom half of the 7th, it was Beaver again who hit his second home run in as many at bats. This time it was a 2-run shot which scored John Paul Head and cut the deficit to 4-3.
East Carolina scored a big insurance run in the top of the 9th when Burress scored on a passed ball.
The Blazers brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th but were unable to cash in as the Pirates took game two by a final of 5-3.
Colin Daniel earned the start for the Green and Gold. The junior right-hander tossed 6.1 innings and struck out six but took the loss. Brendan Conner did not allow an earned run in two innings of work.
Brad Pruett made his third start of the season for ECU. Pruett also threw 6.1 innings and struck out three and earned the win. Jake Hunter tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen and picked up his second save of the season.

- Logan Braunschweig's 66-game on-base streak came to an end.
- Alex Cheeseman extended his hitting streak to five games with a bunt single in the 2nd inning. He has also reached base safely in six straight games.
- Landon Beaver recorded his third multi-hit game of the season. His three RBI are a career-high.
- Nick Hollifield extended his on-base streak to 18 games.
- Todd Clay has been on base in five consecutive games.
