MURFREESBORO - UAB (14-6) split the doubleheader on Sunday at Middle Tennessee (13-6).
GAME 1
UAB got off to a good start in game one of the twinbill. Tyler Waugh brought home Gavin Lewis Jr. on a fielder's choice to open the scoring. The Blazers drew three walks in the inning, including Logan Braunschweig who reached base in his 47th consecutive game.
Neither team would score until the top of the 5th when the Green and Gold would add some insurance. Nick Hollifield singled up the middle to bring home Lewis Jr. to extend the Blazer lead to 2-0. The Blazers added another run in the top half of the 6th when Braunschweig singled to left to score Mayes White from second to put the Blazers up three.
Colin Daniel held the Blue Raiders scoreless through the first five innings of the game including bringing a no-hitter into the 6th inning.
MTSU would get a rally going in the bottom of the 6th. The first four Blue Raiders reached base in the inning. Tyler Minnick opened the scoring by bringing home Eston Snider. The next batter was Brett Vondohlen who scored Keaton Ray to cut the Blazers lead to 3-2. Matt Wolfe then safety-squeezed Minnick in from third to tie the game at 3-3.
It was a pitchers' duel from then until the 10th inning when the Blazers would start a rally of their own. With two down and Tyler Waugh on first, Jax Yoxtheimer singled to left center, but a misplayed ball by the MTSU defense allowed Waugh to score all the way from first and the Blazers took a 4-3 lead. The next batter was Camden Hayslip who reached on another error by the Blue Raiders and Yoxtheimer scored from second to extend the Blazer lead to 5-3.
Back-to-back hits started the MTSU 10th as Keaton Ray singled home Eston Snider to cut the lead to 5-4 but the rally would not be enough as UAB hung on to win game 1, 5-4.
Ryan Olson picked up the win for the Blazers as the junior right-hander struck out the final three MTSU hitters and struck out seven hitters overall in his 4.2 innings of work. Olson also did not allow a walk in his outing on Sunday afternoon.
Game 2
The second game of the day was a pitchers' duel as both starting pitchers went the distance in a predetermined 7-inning contest.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when Tyler Minnick reached on an infield single to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 advantage.
UAB's lone run of the second game came on Todd Clay's RBI single to score Gavin Lewis Jr. from second to tie the game.
The Blue Raiders answered right back in the bottom half of the 5th when Minnick singled through the left side to score Eston Snider and Clay Badylak as MTSU would hang on to win by the score of 3-1.
Chase Ingram tossed his first career complete game in the loss. The junior-right hander allowed just one earned run in six innings of work, striking out six and allowing only one walk.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday when they host the nationally ranked Troy Trojans at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
