Zero Runs Allowed in Day Two at South Alabama Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – The Blazers move to 2-1 on the season with outstanding defensive performances in wins over Northwestern State 7-0 and UIC 8-0.
UAB scores 15 runs while allowing just four hits and no runs. Northwestern State moves to 0-2 on the season while UIC takes their first loss of the season at 0-1.
GAME ONE
Coach Taylor Smartt got her first win as the UAB head coach in game one against Northwestern State. The Blazers wearing all green came out of the gates swinging with three runs through the first two innings. Bria Allen hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Hannah Dorsett who had an RBI groundout in the second. Hannah Miles hit one of her two triples on the day to score Brantlee Wortham. The score after two innings was 3-0 Blazers.
Hope Tucker also hit a triple scoring both Bella Wiggins and Lindsey Smith. Dorsett and Alyssa Aguilar grounded out, scoring two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. UAB had a chance in the sixth inning to end the game on a run rule, but the Demons got out of it.
In the circle, Tait Davidson made her first collegiate appearance and pitched a no-hitter while striking out seven batters.
GAME TWO
Game two was another dominant defensive performance, this time by Mobile native Caroline McLendon. The sophomore pitcher went to St. Paul's Episcopal for her high school years.
Dorsett started off the scoring for UAB on a sacrifice bunt by Auburn Dupree. The play was ruled a fielder's choice with an RBI. In the second inning, the Blazers started pouring it on with four runs on three hits. Antonia Henderson grabbed her first RBI of the year, scoring Lindsey Smith. Brantlee Wortham scored on a Dorsett single and two runners scored on a wild pitch.
The first home run of the UAB softball season was hit by Lindsey Smith in the 5th inning. This gave UAB a 7-0 lead.
McLendon struck out nine batters while allowing just four hits in her season debut.
Henderson ended the game in the fifth inning with a double to left field giving the Blazers an 8-0 win.
UP NEXT
UAB finishes off the South Alabama Invitational tomorrow as the Blazers face off against Murray State at 9:00 a.m. and UIC again at 2:00 p.m.
