UAB Softball Begins 2025 Season in Mobile

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team will head south to Mobile for the South Alabama Invitational presented by Marriott Mobile. The Blazers will start the season against South Alabama on Thursday night at 5:00 pm.
The Blazers will face Northwestern State on Friday at 11:30 am and UIC at 2:00 pm. UAB will play two more on Saturday against Murray State at 9:00 am and UIC at 2:00 pm. Live statistics for the games can be found here. The game against South Alabama will be the only game streamed on ESPN+.
The South Alabama Invitational brings a full slate of quality opponents in UIC, Northwestern State, and Murray State. UAB has faced these opponents a total of 13 times with both UIC and Northwestern State only playing two times. The Blazers only lead the series against Murray State holding a 5-4 mark over the Racers.
UAB will look a little different this year with a brand new coaching staff and eight newcomers on the roster. The Blazers added transfers Ashlyn Shirah and Britt Bourgoyne who came in as juniors as well as six freshmen. UAB returns a lot of bats including their top two hitters from last season in Hannah Dorsett and Bella Wiggins. Wiggins led the team in batting average, triples, slugging %, and walks while Dorsett led the team in hits and at bats. Lindsey Smith will also play a huge role bringing back 33 RBIs and 21 extra base hits. On the bases, Auburn Dupree stole 13 bags while hitting .283.
The pitching staff will look a little different after losing Leigh Kirby and Olivia Valbak. Those two were responsible for 200 innings pitched in the 2024 season. Look for Caroline McLendon and Caitlin Russell to get a lot more innings this year.
FAMILIAR FACES
The UAB coaching staff is very familiar with the South Alabama Jaguars. Assistant coach Madeline Porter played with USA assistant coach Kelly Horne and graduate assistant Libby Baker in college at Troy. Head coach Taylor Smartt coached Porter, Horne, and Baker at Troy.
