Another Big Day for Blazer Softball

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team finished the South Alabama Invitational with wins over Murray State 9-1 and UIC 6-3. UAB finished the tournament 4-1 on the weekend, only dropping the first game against South Alabama.
GAME ONE
The Blazers scored in the first inning once again in the early morning matchup against Murray State. Three consecutive hits by Bella Wiggins, Hope Tucker, and Lindsey Smith gave UAB three first inning runs. Wiggins hit a triple, Tucker hit a double, and Smith hit her second home run of the season. Murray State added a run of their own in the first.
Wiggins scored for the second time in the game after a Lindsey Smith double to left center. UAB saw the ball particularly well in this one, with six players recording a hit and four players recording multiple hits. UAB led 4-1 after three innings.
UAB poured it on in the fourth inning scoring four runs on four hits and two errors. Alyssa Aguilar, Hannah Miles, and Hannah Dorsett had consecutive singles. Kailey Collett scored on a throwing error on the bunt by Dorsett. Ashlyn Shirah pinch hit for her season debut, hitting a ground ball to third base. Wiggins stepped up and hit a two RBI single and the score was 8-1 after four innings.
Brantlee Wortham singled and then came around to score after an Aguilar double to left center. The Blazers were able to get three outs and end the game after five innings 9-1.
Tait Davidson made her second collegiate start after pitching a no-hitter yesterday. She finished all five innings for her second career complete game.
GAME TWO
UAB has now scored in their fourth consecutive first inning and that pattern continued in the second game against UIC. Bella Wiggins got her third RBI of the weekend that scored Hannah Dorsett. UIC also added one run in the first inning. Caroline McLendon made her first relief appearance of the season coming in for Olivia Cummings. McLendon went on to pitch 3.1 innings giving up just one hit.
UAB scored two in the third inning with an single by Auburn Dupree and Lindsey Smith. UIC came back and tied the game 3-3 in the third, after a few hits and an error by UAB.
Innings five-seven were dominated by the Blazers who allowed just one hit and two base runners. UAB scored one run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Hope Tucker. The Blazers added two more runs in the seventh inning to put the game away. Dupree scored Dorsett with a single and then she came around and scored to make the final score 6-3 UAB. 4-1 is the best five game start since 2020.

UP NEXT
UAB is back in action next weekend at the Samford Invitational where the Blazers face off against Samford and Indiana State Saturday and Sunday.
