Day One at Crimson Classic Ends with One Win

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (9-8) beat Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (5-8) and lost to #22 Alabama (11-6) on day one at the Crimson Classic.

GAME ONE
SIUE started off the scoring with a two run home run in the first inning. UAB answered in the second inning with a bundle of hits including a double to left center by Bella Wiggins and a double from Lindsey Smith. UAB led 4-2 after two innings. Ashlyn Shirah hit her first home run of the year to give UAB a three run lead in the third inning.

The Cougars did not go away scoring two runs to make the score 5-4. We had a game going into the bottom of the fourth inning. UAB immediately answered that with two runs of their own. Hannah Dorsett continues to get on base, singling to score Wiggins. Then Ashlyn Shirah hit an infield single to help score Britt Bourgoyne. Bourgoyne pinch ran for Hope Tucker at the top of the inning.

Heading into the top of the seventh inning, SIUE needed four runs to continue the game. A few hits scored one run for the Cougars, but that was it. The Blazers won 7-5.

GAME TWO
The Blazers got off to a great start landing two on base in the first inning and scoring on an Alabama throwing error.

The Alabama floodgates opened in the second inning with a home run by Kali Heivlin. Alabama scored just two runs in the third before putting up 10 in the fourth inning. Five hits and two errors aided the 10 Alabama runs and gave them a 15-1 lead.

UAB was held to just one hit in the five inning game.
