UAB Softball Preview: Crimson Classic

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (8-7) heads to #22 Alabama (10-6) for the Crimson Classic Tournament. The tournament will host UAB, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and Furman Friday-Sunday.
UAB finished off the Green and Gold classic this week as well as their first midweek at Mississippi State. The Blazers went 2-4 over their last six games, heading into a tough stretch of games. The Crimson Classic starts on Friday before heading to Tampa to face South Florida next weekend for the first AAC series of the year. UAB looks to keep the hot bats going, leading the AAC in batting average (.338).
Last year the Blazers finished in 6th place in the AAC with a 14-13 record. UAB was picked 7th in this year's AAC Preseason Poll. Head Coach Taylor Smartt starts her second stint as a collegiate head coach with the first coming in interim form. She was the Interim Head Coach at Troy for the 2022 season. Coach Smartt takes over the UAB program after leading another AAC last year in Florida Atlantic.

The Blazers bring back there top two batters in Bella Wiggins(.339) and Hannah Dorsett (.317)

Bella Wiggins led the AAC in Tripled with seven. Wiggins was 11th in the AAC with a .339 batting average. Wiggins was 10th in the AAC in slugging % (.602).

Auburn Dupree was 5th in the AAC in stolen bases with 13.

Lindsey Smith led the AAC in assists with 148.

Bella Wiggins is ranked 15th in the country and first in the American in stolen bases with 11.

Hope Tucker is ninth in the country and first in the American in sacrifice bunts per game (.43).

Bella Wiggins is ranked 21st in the country and 1st in the American in on base percentage (.611).

Caroline McLendon has thrown four complete games which is good enough for a 39th ranking in the country.

UAB leads the conference in batting average (.338), stolen bases per game (1.87), and triples (7).
SERIES HISTORY
UAB is currently tied 1-1 in the series with SIUE. The last time the two teams met was in 2018 with SIUE winning 2-5.
Alabama currently leads the series 33-0 over UAB. UAB has scored a total of three runs over the last four meetings.
The Blazers hold a current series record of 3-1 over Fruman. UAB won the last game in 2020, 9-5.
