Blazers Run Win Streak to Six After Sweep of South Alabama

The Green and Gold got six strong innings from junior right-hander Chase Ingram (1-0), who surrendered just one run in the outing. Braxton Shelton picked up a four-out save after getting the Green and Gold out of a jam in the top of the 8th.
South Alabama jumped on the board first thanks to an RBI single by Kyle Morrison in the top of the 1st.
The bulk of the Blazers' runs came in the bottom of the 2nd where UAB tacked on four straight two out hits. Alex Cheeseman singled home Wesley Helms to tie the game at one apiece. The next batter was Gavin Lewis Jr. who delivered a two-strike hit through the right side to score Braxton Brooks. Logan Braunschweig kept the rally going with an RBI single of his own to score Cheeseman to run the score to 3-1. After a walk by Nick Hollifield, Todd Clay sent a two-strike base hit of his own to right field to score Lewis and Braunschweig to cap off the five-run 2nd inning.
The Blazers added two more in the bottom of the 3rd. After two straight errors by the Jaguar defense, Tyler Harrington sent an 0-2 pitch into right field to score Helms. A selfless at-bat by Cheeseman brought home Brooks to run the score to 7-1.
Neither team would score again until the top of the 7th when the Jags opened the inning with back-to-back base hits. After the Blazers turned two thanks to an interference call, the Jags picked up their third hit of the inning on an RBI single by John Smith to cut the Blazer lead to five.
It was then USA's turn to score with two outs as the Jags picked up back-to-back doubles by Michael Young and Ty Brooks in the 8th inning. Brooks' knock drove home Lucas Ismaili and Young to trim the lead to 7-4. The next batter was Rett Johnson who singled through the right side to send Brooks home as the Jags cut the lead to two.
The Green and Gold picked up some much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th. Hollifield singled home Cheeseman from second to make the score 8-5. Todd Clay followed suit and sent Braunschweig home on a sac fly to right.
USA would not go down quietly. After two of the first three Jags reached base via a walk, Josh Stevenson doubled home Morrison to cut the Blazer lead to 9-6. Young grounded out to shortstop for the Jags final run of the day.
The Blazers travel to Troy on Wednesday afternoon for a 4 p.m. first pitch at Riddle-Pace Field against the nationally ranked Trojans. The game is set to be televised on ESPN+.
