BIRMINGHAM - Dominant pitching and timely hitting put UAB (5-1) over South Alabama (4-2) on Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at Young Memorial Field. This marks the Blazers' first five game winning streak since 2022.
Reigning American Conference Pitcher of the Week Colin Daniel battled through six innings against the Jaguar offense. The junior right-hander struck out eight USA batters, gave up three runs, and walked two. Ryan Olson pitched the final three innings of the ballgame, striking out three and surrendering two hits, earning the save.
Todd Clay and the UAB offense started off on a good note on Saturday as the junior from Auburn singled up the middle to score Logan Braunschweig in the 1st inning. Both teams were held scoreless from that point on until the top of the 4th.
The Jaguars scored their first runs of the weekend in the top of the 4th as Hector Mangual singled through the left side to score Kyle Morrison. The next batter was Brennan Holt who singled through the right side to score Josh Stevenson. Mangual scored on a sac fly by Cole Ketzner to put the Jags up 3-1.
The Blazers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. After Clay got hit by a pitch on a 3-2 count, Camden Hayslip sent his first home run of the season over the right field wall to tie the game at three a piece.
Three straight walks got the Green and Gold going again in the 6th inning. Hayslip reached on a fielder's choice to bring Logan Braunschweig home to put the Blazers back in front.
Braunschweig finished 2-3 with two runs and a walk. He has now reached safely in an American Conference leading 34 straight games dating back to last season.
A couple of bunt singles by Tyler Waugh and Alex Cheeseman had the Blazers threatening again in the bottom half of the 6th inning. That's when Braunschweig doubled down the left field line to score Waugh for the final UAB run of the day.
Daniel and Olson combined to shut out the Jaguars in the final five innings of the game. Olson is the third Blazer this season to record a save.
The Blazers go for the sweep of the Jaguars on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Young Memorial Field. Kids 12 and under have the opportunity to run the bases after the game.
