Blazers Dominate in First Win of 2025-26 Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's basketball team opened the 2025-26 season with a dominant win over Mississippi Valley State 106-55, on Monday night at Bartow Arena.
In the 51-point win, Chance Westry (23) and Jacob Meyer (22) surpassed 20 points and five total Blazers scored more than 10 points. Chance Westry went 8-12 from the field and five boards, putting together his best collegiate performance to date. Evan Chatman posted eight rebounds to lead the team, followed by six from KyeRon Lindsay-Martin. Westry also led the team in steals with four, while five Blazers had multiple steals.
MVSU's Michael James had a game-high 25 points with four steals, three rebounds, and a pair of assists. Lamont Sams led the Delta Devils with five rebounds. MVSU shot 16-for-55 (29.1%) from the field, the worst performance by a UAB opponent since Millsaps shot 11-for-57 (19.3%) back in 2021.

- Syracuse transfer Westry led the Blazers with a career-high 23 points. Westry also set career-highs with five boards and four steals.
- Meyer dominated the first half with a game-high 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. Meyer finished the night with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
- Senior guard Ahmad Robinson led UAB with seven assists to go along with his 14 points and five rebounds.
- UAB's 106 points were the most since the Blazers scored 109 vs Auburn-Montgomery last season. The 51-point win over the Delta Devils was the largest since the same victory over AUM, Nov. 18, 2024.
- The Blazers held MVSU to 29.1% shooting, the lowest since UAB held Millsaps to 19.3% from the field on Nov. 12, 2021.
- UAB was up 37 points at the break, the largest UAB lead at halftime since Nov. 16, 2022 vs Rhodes (39).
- MVSU turned the ball over 26 times, the most by a Blazer opponent since Rhodes (29) on Nov. 14, 2021.
- Six Blazers made their NCAA debut.
- UAB got off to a hot start, taking a 16-4 lead through 4:21 with the help of eight quick points from Jacob Meyer [16-4].
- MVSU climbed back within six following a Tyrone Iroghama tip-in [22-16].
- An 11-point run across nearly five minutes gave the Blazers a considerable cushion into the final minutes of the first half [33-16].
- Robinson (7) and Meyer (6) led a 13-1 run into the final media timeout of the opening half [46-20].
- UAB closed the opening half on a 13-point run, giving the Blazers its largest halftime lead (37) since Nov. 16, 2022 vs Rhodes College (39) [59-22].
- After a pair of MVSU buckets to start the second half, UAB went on a 16-2 run to extend its lead to 49 [77-28].
- The Delta Devils responded with a 12-point run, their longest of the game, holding UAB scoreless for 3:51 and 0-for-6 shooting [77-40].
- UAB snapped out of its scoring drought with a pair of Chatman free throws, quickly followed up by a Westry three-pointer [82-40].
- Westry and the starting-five continued the Blazer dominance, extending the UAB lead to a game-high 52 on a Dayjaun Anderson three [99-47].
- The Blazer bench put up the final seven points for UAB as Quaran McPherson grabbed his first three career points [106-55].
- UAB hits the road for its only power-conference opposition of the year, taking on North Carolina State, Friday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. CT.
- The Wolfpack won its first game in the Will Wade era, dominating their season opener against North Carolina Central, 114-66.
