BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB men's basketball (1-2) fell to Alabama State (1-1), 74-77 on Tuesday night in Bartow Arena. Chance Westry led the Blazers as he tallied a career-high 25 points to pace the UAB offense. KyeRon Lindsay-Martin and Ahmad Robinson both scored in double figures, posting 14 and 12 points, respectively. Evan Chatman (nine rebounds) and Daniel Rivera (eight rebounds) controlled the glass, as the duo combined for 17 rebounds.
Alabama State was led by senior guard Asjon Anderson with 20 points on 11 made free throws. Micah Simpson added 18 points on six made three-pointers.
Game Notes
- Westry tallied a career-high 25 points, en route to his second game of the season scoring 20-plus points.
- Evan Chatman made his first start for UAB after playing two years at McLennan Community College.
- Rivera grabbed his 500th career rebound, with eight rebounds on the night to bring his total to 501 (266 at Bryant, 216 at UMass, 19 at UAB).
- Salim London recorded four rebounds and four assists, both career-highs.
- UAB shot 29-for-70 (.414) from the floor and 2-for-20 ( .100) from the three-point line and 14-for-18 (.778) from the charity stripe.
- The Blazers tallied its worst three-point shooting percentage since Nov. 4, 2024, vs Vermont. (0-for-10).
- The Green & Gold controlled the glass, out rebounding Alabama State 43 to 39 on the night.

- After a quick Robinson lay-in to start the game, the Hornets went on a 14-2 run to take a 10-point lead and force an early UAB timeout [4-14].
- Five straight Rivera points cut the Alabama State lead in half, bringing the Blazers within five at 9:16 [17-22].
- Alabama State responded with a fastbreak dunk and a three-pointer to immediately restore its 10-point advantage [17-27].
- UAB closed the Alabama State lead to two with a 14-6 run that saw five different Blazers score [31-33].
- Alabama State's fifth three-pointer of the half and back-to-back lay-ins from Westry and Rivera closed out the first half, giving Alabama State just a one-point lead heading into the locker room [35-36].
- The Hornets reopened the lead to five out of halftime, but three straight fast break buckets by the Blazers put UAB ahead for the first time since 26 seconds in the game [45-44].
- Lindsay-Martin scored six straight for the Blazers. Along with a McPherson layup, UAB took an eight-point lead, its largest of the game to that point, forcing Alabama State to use a timeout [55-47].
- Alabama State stormed back with a 16-5 run over 7:34 of game time, taking a three-point lead into the final media timeout [60-63].
- The Hornets continued to pull away late, extending their lead to nine with a pair of layups and free throws [62-71].
- The Blazers didn't back down, using the foul game to cut the lead to three in just 28 seconds. Westry hit the Blazers' first three of the game with 36 seconds remaining, followed by a pair of Robinson free throws [69-72].
- Another quick Westry bucket was sandwiched by four Anderson free throws [71-75].
- Westry hit his second three-pointer in the span of a minute, pulling UAB within just a point of Alabama State. Anderson found himself back at the charity stripe after a quick UAB foul. Anderson hit both shots to put the Hornets back up three [74-77].
- UAB had a chance with just three seconds left, but the ball was stolen at midcourt to end the scoring at 74-77.
- The Blazers are back at Bartow Arena Friday night, hosting High Point for a 6:30 p.m. tip.
- High Point started the year off with three wins against Furman, Averett, and Jacksonville.
