BIRMINGHAM – UAB head women's soccer coach Lisa Mann announced the addition of Lucas Costa as an assistant coach on Thursday.
"We are delighted to have Lucas join our coaching staff," Mann said. "He will add huge value and help us elevate the level in many areas of our program".
Before joining the Blazers, Costa spent the 2023 season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as an assistant coach. He helped develop Zoe Theriot into a starting goalkeeper with a .809 save percentage.
Prior to Costa's time with the Islanders, he spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Shippensburg University. Before taking the job at Shippensburg, Costa served as an assistant with the Tupelo Futbol Club where he coached U15 girls and U14 boys while working under head coach Jorge Alvarez. He was an integral practice instructor who trained defenders and goalkeepers.
Also with the Tupelo Futbol Club, Costa devised position-specific practice plans for attacking players and scouting. He also held individual training sessions for players.
Costa played two seasons at Shorter University where he appeared in 25 matches as a defender and made 19 starts for the Hawks. In his final semester, he served as a volunteer coach and completed an internship with the sports information office. Costa also spent one season as a starter at Middle Georgia State and one season at Wester Texas College.
A native of Distrito Federal, Brazil, Costa played for some of the top youth teams in the capital city of Brazil.
Costa received a bachelor's degree from Shorter in May 2020 and an associate degree from Western Texas College in May 2018. He earned his MBA from Shippensburg in May of 2023.
