Blazers Secure Sweep Over North Texas

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball rallied back from an early UNT lead to secure the sweep with a ten-hit game on eight runs. The Blazers held UNT to six as they improved their record to 17-21 overall and 8-7 in the AAC.
The Green and Gold finished with their first sweep over UNT in nearly a decade, with the last three-game sweep coming in 2015.
IN THE INNINGS
The Green and Gold saw themselves trailing early after a homer to left field to give UNT a three-run lead. UAB then entered Caitlin Russell for Leigha Kirby in the fourth to halt the hitting run.
The Blazers were able to keep the Mean Green at three, stranding a total of four runners through two innings before the Green and Gold went on a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth, starting with back-to-back-to-back singles from Bella Wiggins, Lindsey Smith, and Olivia Valbak.
With the bases loaded before a 2RBI base hit from freshman, Ant Henderson plated Smith and Valbak to put the Blazers on the board. Alyssa Aguilar followed with a single to first base, sending Valbak across home and tying the score at three. With pinch runners entering for Henderson and Aguilar, Carlie Wilkins entered as a pinch hitter, loading the bases after a walk before taking the lead after a groundout to the shortstop.
UAB scored twice more with a Hannah Dorsett sac fly and a wild pitch, giving UAB the 6-3 lead to close out the fourth. UNT went through the fifth with one hit and a fielder's choice but did not capitalize. The Blazers went cold in the bottom of the inning, gathering a single from Smith but unable to plate a batter after a double play closed the inning early. But the Green and Gold regained momentum in the top of the sixth with three hits and two runs, including a triple from Miles to score Makenzie Droddy.
With the Blazers ahead five runs, UNT responded with a three-run rally in the seventh before the Blazers reentered Kirby in the final two outs before a diving catch from Auburn Dupree in foul territory concluded the game and secured the sweep.
IN THE BOX
- UAB totaled ten hits on the eight-run victory. Lindsey Smith led the team in hits with two.
- Hannah Miles and Ant Henderson finished the game with two RBIs apiece.
- Caitlin Russell collected the win, facing 18 batters and improving to a record of 5-3.
UP NEXT
The Blazers travel to Auburn, AL to face the Auburn Tigers on April 9 and host the Memphis Tigers for an AAC series at Mary Bowers Field on April 11-13.
