Weekly Preview: Softball Faces a Pair of Tigers For Weekly Matchups

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball returns to action this week as they take on the Auburn Tigers and Memphis Tigers on April 9 and 12-14. The Blazers come off a series sweep over North Texas to improve their record to 8-7 in AAC play and 17-21 overall.
The Green and Gold additionally racked up conference honors, with Leigha Kirby and Lindsey Smith securing AAC Softball Honor Roll selections for the week of April 8. Smith went .555 in batting and perfect in fielding percentage, while Kirby totaled nine strikeouts, eight of which came in the team's shutout win over the Mean Green on Friday.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Meeting the Tigers for the 18th time, UAB is no stranger to Auburn. The Blazers have won two games in the overall series with the last victory over the Tigers coming in 2003. The latest meeting between the two saw a10-1 loss for the Blazers.
Since then, Auburn went on to go 43-19, including an NCAA Regional appearance in 2023. Entering 2024, the Tigers have taken on the likes of Virginia Tech, Utah, and Arkansas. The Tigers hold a record of 20-12-1 with the one tie coming versus the Hokies in early February.
Auburn ranks in the bottom half of the SEC in batting with a team average of .270. However, they sit at the top half of the ranks in fielding. Led by the likes of Icess Tresvik and Makayla Packer, the Tigers have remained above .500, toting a 10-2-1 record at Jane B. Moore Field. Tresvik is one of three Tigers batting above .300 in addition to Packer and Anna Wohlers.
In the circle, Maddie Penta is the ace pitcher with a 1.64 ERA. Penta has held opposing batters to an average of .177 and has struck out 167 batters on the year as of April 8.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS
UAB faces Memphis for the first time in over a decade, with the last meeting coming in 2013. Since then, the Blazers overall series versus the Tigers has UAB leading 8-18. The Tigers had an extensive non-conference slate, taking on the likes of LSU, Ole Miss, and Arizona State.
The team's first conference win came against UTSA, where the Tigers posted eight runs on nine hits. Ranking top of the conference in errors with 80, the Tigers have a fielding percentage of .921, the lowest in the conference. The team has allowed 275 runs with an ERA of 6.57.
