BIRMINGHAM – In the bottom of the eighth, Alyssa Aguilar sent a sacrifice fly out to left field, falling into the glove of a UNT outfielder before pinch runner Kaily Collett crossed home. With Collett plated, the Blazers collected the walk-off win over North Texas, clinching the series with a 4-3 victory.
The Green and Gold finished with seven hits in the win. Two Blazers finished the day with multiple hits to help lift the squad to the series clinch.
IN THE INNINGS
The game was scoreless through four innings, but not without both teams putting their best defense on display. Both teams were held to two hits over half of the game until the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Hannah Dorsett delivered a leadoff base hit to center field and Bella Wiggins had a sac bunt to advance Dorsett to second.
A walk and wild pitch put two Blazers on Base before Olivia Valbak drawing a walk loaded the bases. The Green and Gold were unable to secure a run after back-to-back outs stranded three.
North Texas was first to strike after a fielder's choice and base hit to put two runners on base. Another single sent a Mean Green runner across home to put UNT up by one run, but the Blazers quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth. An error from the shortstop gave Hannah Miles the go-ahead to reach first before Auburn Dupree had a sac bunt and advanced on that same error.
Hannah Dorsett again delivered a base hit, plating Dupree and Miles to give UAB the 2-1 lead. UAB left two stranded, unable to keep the momentum going. North Texas responded to the Blazers with a solo homer to tie it all up at two apiece but did not collect another run.
The game went without another run through the sixth and seventh innings. It would come down to the eighth inning, where UNT tallied an early base hit in the top of the eighth, followed by three straight walks to plate a runner, giving UNT the lead again. With the Mean Green leading 3-2, UAB had one more chance to respond in the bottom of the eighth.
Lindsey Smith started with a double to right center, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Valbak to advance Smith to third. Ant Henderson drew a walk before Kaily Collett entered at pinch runner. Collett stole second and advanced after a throwing error, sending Smith across home plate to tie the score again.
Alyssa Aguilar became the game hero with a sac fly RBI to left field, giving Collett the okay to score a run, giving UAB the 4-3 win.
