UAB Loses Series to Wichita State

WICHITA — UAB Fell to Wichita State in the third and final game of the series Sunday morning. The Blazers sit at a record of 21-24 and 12-9 in AAC standings.
IN THE INNINGS – UAB opened up the game with a leadoff bunt single from Auburn Dupree to start the inning. A fielder's choice followed, from Hannah Dorsett to put UAB in scoring position before a walk was drawn, placing two on base early. The Green and Gold would be left stranded. Wichita State responded in the bottom of the inning with a walk and homer to take the two-run lead.
The Blazers went on to gain a runner on base from a walk before being struck out, leaving one stranded. The Shockers responded in the bottom of the second after being hit by a pitch and drawing a walk. With two on first and second, WSU sent a 2RBI double to increase the lead to four before Leigha Kirby struck out a batter to halt the momentum.
The Blazers went hitless and scoreless in the top of the third. But Kirby and the defense went three-up-three-down, bringing the inning to the fourth. After a walk for Lindsey Smith to put UAB on base, the Blazers were struck out twice before Smith advanced on a wild pitch to threaten a run. The Green and Gold would be unable to capitalize, striking out swinging to close out the inning.
With a scoreless and hitless fourth inning. The fifth saw another bunt from Dupree to put a Blazer on base, but she was left stranded. The Shockers followed up with a solo shot to left field increasing the lead to five. After a double, freshman Olivia Cummings entered the circle for UAB. After a lineout and strikeout, the Green and Gold closed out the inning with a popup into Valbak's glove.
The Green and Gold opened up the sixth with a double from Bella Wiggins and a walk but went down with three strikeouts to conclude the top half. The Green and Gold continued the momentum into the bottom of the sixth, holding Wichita State to five. The Blazers entered the final half-inning of the game with two early outs before Dupree walked. But Dorsett closed out the inning striking out looking.
IN THE BOX
- The Blazers totaled three hits, two of which came from Dupree.
- The Green and Gold left eight runners on base and never reached third base.
- Kirby falls to a record of 8-9. She struck out three batters. Olivia Cummings finished with two innings pitched and seven batters faced. She gave up one run and struck out a batter.
- The Blazers all-time record versus Wichita sits at 2-3.

UAB faces Charlotte at Mary Bowers Field on Friday, April 26 for the final home series of the season.
