BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball concluded the weekend with a series-clinching win over the USF Bulls. The Blazers (14-17, 5-4 AAC) defeated South Florida 7-4 on Sunday afternoon, placing the Green and Gold on a two-game win streak.

UAB finished with another ten-hit afternoon, with Bella Wiggins leading the pack with two hits and a homer. Olivia Cummings finished the afternoon going 2-0 in the circle, with Leigha Kirby and Caitlin Russell helping seal the deal for the Green and Gold in the final three innings.

IN THE INNINGS

The game started hot, with the Blazers hitting a leadoff single from Auburn Dupree. Following Dupree's base hit, a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Dorsett sent Dupree into scoring position before another base hit from Olivia Valbak loaded the bases with Bella Wiggins at second. After Lindsey Smith was hit by a pitch, the Blazers were the first to score on the board. Carlie Wilkins then came to bat, bursting the door open to plate Valbak, Smith, and Wiggins with a 5-0 start.

In the second, the Bulls responded with a pair of runs off a single by Garcia-Soto. The Blazers stopped the momentum with a groundout to round into the bottom of the inning, adding a homer from Wiggins to put UAB ahead 6-2. The Green and Gold delivered a three-and-out in the top of the third, bringing the game to the bottom of the inning, seeing the Blazers add another run to the board after an RBI from Makenzie Droddy.

Through the fifth, Olivia Cummings remained in the game before sophomore Caitlin Russell entered the circle. The Bulls and Blazers went scoreless before a base hit put USF on base, followed by another pair of hits that sent two runners across home plate. With the score at 7-5, USF looked to continue the offensive momentum, they delivered a three and out in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to its final half-inning.

With the game in its final inning, UAB entered Leigha Kirby in the circle. The Bulls delivered a single in the top of the seventh. However, the UAB defense held its ground, snagging a flyball out, followed by a strikeout courtesy of Kirby to give UAB the series-clinching win.

IN THE BOX

The Blazers totaled double-digit hits in the afternoon to close out the half. Bella Wiggins led the team in hits throughout the series with six.
The Green and Gold sit at a record of 5-4 after the victory, placing them sixth in the conference standings.
Olivia Cummings remains undefeated in the circle.
The Blazer defense left eight USF runners on base to UAB's six. The Blazers totaled three stolen bases.
